3.0 out of 5 stars Reasonably good/complete. Many errors in print, sample exam, July 12, 1999

The book does a reasonable job of preparing you for the exams but has many errors. In some cases, questions are asked in the SelfPrep exam that the book did not prepare you for. The errata list is not complete (I have submitted approx. 20 more errors that were not documented in the errata). The SelfPrep exam sometimes indicated a wrong answer as the correct one and has a major bug in the "Review marked questions" - when reviewing, you will see questions appear that you did not see in the exam as you were taking it. Still, it did help me pass the SA1 exam. On to the remaining ones!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great format, but should have been proofread better., September 24, 1999
This review is from: Clp Training Guide: Lotus Notes with CDROM (Textbook Binding)
Since it had been quite a while since I took the system administration classes at an LAEC and I wanted to take the SA1 and SA2 exams, I bought this book to help me prepare for those exams. It certainly served me well as I scored VERY highly on both tests on my first try, but there are many errors in the book that can be confusing and misleading to someone who has less background knowledge of Lotus Notes. I found the practice tests on the CD to be very useful, even though there were some errors there too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps too much info if passing the test is your goal, November 19, 1998
This review is from: Clp Training Guide: Lotus Notes with CDROM (Textbook Binding)
I just took (and passed, yea!) exams AD1, 2, and SA1. I prepared with this book and the McGraw Hill "Lotus Notes Certification Guide", oh, and 3 years application development experience too.

This book has a lot of information. But, I think if your immediate goal is to pass the tests in order to prove you know something about Notes, there is too much information to absorb. The McGraw Hill book does a better job of targeting what the tests require. While I'm all for learning everything you can about Notes, the best way to do that it to use it (create apps, and/or administer Notes users/networks/servers). I found the explanations in this book to be too deep - too much for the tests, which aren't that deep really. Unfortunately I found the tests concentrated on rather unimportant aspects of Notes; e.g., shared mail. Bottom line is the McGraw Hill book focuses on the obscure things on the test, while this book (to it's credit) tries to tell you everything about Notes.

In particular, I found the explanations of certificates, domains, networks, to be too complicated compared to the McGraw Hill book, which did a simpler job of it.

Ideally, you'd have both books.

I also recommend reading about 1 exam's worth of stuff, then immediately taking the exam. Don't wait or you'll have to read it again. Don't more than one exam at a sitting either - I did and almost blew the AD2 exam while nearly acing the SA1 exam - which was the last thing I read.
