Intriquing, Exotic, Soothing, yet Melancholy,
By dewitt barker (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews

Super Cool. Exotica meets 40's big band arranging with a Japanese/Pacific Isle melodic twist. Historical liner notes detail the intriquing history of musicians in Hawaii's post-WWII Japanese community. I love this record, then again, everything this label puts out is excellent.

A jaunt through time,

If I were a derelict at a bus stop in the 1950s, in post-war Hawaii and saw these nice, well-dressed Japanese Americans escort their dates into these clubs, I would want to join them. I would have marveled at the Japanese Ricky Ricardo. If I were stopped at the door, unable to enter because of my dress, I would be content to stand on the sidewalk and peer in. There is a woman in there that I could love.

I was in Japan in the mid-1950's and fell in love with the "special sound" music. Settle back for some of the most pleasant listening you've ever experienced!

1950s Japanese Music,
By Glenn Reed (Rochester,MA USA) - See all my reviews

These songs were very popular with American GIs during the Japanese occupation and the Korean War.I was stationed in Central Honshu at Itami Air Base and Japanese entertainers performed most of these song in the NCO and service clubs.I purchased a Hi-Fi LP in the late 1950s recorded by the 49thState Hawaii Record Club with many of the same songs on it as the Club Nisei CD.I am looking forward to hearing these songs on the CD with the improved sound technology.

Downloaded this album for my Issei mom (ordering Enka CDs from Japan takes eons). Mom especially loved the first soundtrack "Otomi-San", and remembers some of the numbers post WWII (says "Wakare no Ippon-Sugi" is a school graduation song, and sounds alot alike the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" but sweeter). I really love the version of "Hibari no Madorosu-san" and especially "Ginza Kan Kan Musume".
Those seeking Japanese post-war periodic music for backgrounds/video montages/family videos, this is your collection, as it was actually recorded in the day (not some studio revision). It's a nice primer for those getting into Enka music (which is much like Japanese Country and Western -- even if you can't understand Japanese, you can understand it's music about home, family and lost love). Get it for your international/periodic music collection. |
