5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Robin Williams. A Movie Ahead of its Time!
This is a great movie with more funny one-liners than any ten recent comodies combined. Robin Williams is superb as is Peter O'Toole.

Beautifully set in Jamaica with a soundrack by Jimmy Cliff that's to die for.

This is a must own for fans of Williams, O'Toole, Cliff, or the beauty of the Carribean.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun
This is a thin, episodic film, that, if you don't like fluff, you won't like this. But I don't mind sleight films, inherently, so enjoyed this, because the jokes are often clever, the performances generally fine ones...Robin Williams, as usual, is really awkward and not very watchable, but that is more than made up for by Peter O'Toole, who brings his usual charisma...

4.0 out of 5 stars Vastly underrated, February 9, 2006

This review is from: Club Paradise [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie was a favorite of mine and my friends when it came out in the 80s. It is a silly comedy with some great comedic talents from the Second City troupe. The combination of Rick Moranis and Eugene Levy is hilarious as Barry and Barry, the desperate friends trying to find women who are even remotely attracted to them at the resort. They have some of the best lines. Andrea Martin is also extremely funny, and I can't help but laugh at her doing the limbo and trying to belt out soulful reggae while half drunk. Robin Williams has a more laid back routine in this movie, which is rare for a comedian that can't seem to have a sane conversation when he gives interviews. He is the main character and leaves more of the antics to the supporting cast, but he does a nice job. As others have said, the music in the movie is excellent and Jimmy Cliff provides a great soundtrack, supplemented by one great reggae cover by the Kinks, "Apeman", which I have since tried to find.

It's worth checking out for a good laugh. It is one of those movies that I remember fondly and can still laugh at because it doesn't take itself too seriously.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just Plain Fun, August 13, 2004

Hubby and I found Club Paradise by accident a number of years ago, and picked it up because we recognized the cast as actors we enjoyed, and we couldn't resist the setting. We have never regretted it!

We've watched Club Paradise many times, and love being able to get away to the island "in the ocean" somewhere, at the club with "the best beach on the island." Robin Williams is wryly humorous, trying frantically to keep the club out of the hands of developers, keep his guests happy and out of trouble, and keep his partner and staff from starting a revolution. The intertwined plot threads of the various guests may be a bit predictable, but they're well-played and full of laughs, thanks to the talents of the actors. The music is great.

And how could I not mention that Peter O'Toole steals every scene he's in? He alone would be worth getting this movie.

Classic art? No, it's not. An enjoyable way to spend an evening? Absolutely, a pleasure, and highly recommended. It's the kind of movie you enjoy watching over and over again.

I look forward to Club Paradise being released on DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it to me on DVD PLEASE!!!, June 21, 2004
This review is from: Club Paradise [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The scene where Eugene Levy and Rick Moranis hit the beach is one of the funiest 5 minutes on film I've ever seen!

This movie HAS TO be rereleased on DVD. Will somebody PLEASE tell the studio that if Power Ranger Movies can be on DVD, why not a cult classic like Club Paradise?!!!

I got tired of waiting for this great movie to be released on DVD, so I wrote Warner Bros. I'm happy to tell you that their answer was positive. Club Paradise will be released on DVD next year. Now I just hope I will be able to wait that long...

4.0 out of 5 stars "Funny stuff" for SCTV, Caddy Shack, Animal House lovers, March 24, 2004

My title refers to Eugene Levy (if you saw most of SCTV, you know what I'm referring to) but Club Paradise has an interesting, if predictable, plot and enough "situations" to allow the all-star cast to ham it up.

Robin Williams, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Peter O'Toole, Joe Flaherty, Jimmy Cliff(!), Twiggy plays it straight a la Blues Brothers and is lovely.

Harold Ramis' direction, again, has the perfect touch.

Oh, did I mention the reggae soundtrack is terrific?

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid 'feel good' movie, October 24, 1999

This review is from: Club Paradise [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have watched this movie so many times and I still enjoy it so much. I had never heard of it when I first hired it from a video store but being a Robin Williams fan, and a comedy fan, I gave it a go. Isn't it great how you can discover a treasure like this without ever hearing a load of 'hype' about it first? The music is great and I spent a lot of time just getting the soundtrack from overseas, I am in Australia, and I could only get it on cassette. This is a real shame as I am quickly wearing the tape out and cannot replace it. Why is it not available on CD? Great Movie...Great Music...

4.0 out of 5 stars "Club Paradise" Better than they wanted it to be?, August 4, 1999
This review is from: Club Paradise [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I remember the first time I saw Club Paradise and thought then as well as now that it was a very funny movie. Yet for some reason the critics, if you can call them that, like to slam a movie because it apparently doesn't fit into what they, in all their limited wisdom, think is funny. It may not have been the funniest movie I have ever seen, but there were several gags and clever one-liners by Robin Williams (who is the master of the one-liner) as well as the rest of the cast not to mention some great music and beautiful scenery. I guess it's like beauty being in the eye of the beholder, one's man's trash is another man's treasure. As far as I'm concerned, most of these critics don't know Adam from Eve. A Big Thumbs Up to Robin and the rest of the folks that made this very enjoyable movie possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars ITS TIME FOR DVD, August 4, 2004
This review is from: Club Paradise [VHS] (VHS Tape)
THIS MOVIE ROCKS. ITS IN THE TYPICAL STYLE FOR THE 80S. ROBIN WILLIAMS IS AT HIS FUNNIEST AND MAYBE SOON IT WILL COME OUT ON AN EDITION OTHER THAN VHS, LIKE DVD, SO WE CAN ENJOY THIS MOVIE FOR YEARS TO GO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD??, October 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Club Paradise [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is by far one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It's packed with great one-liners and unforgettable scenes that stay fresh no matter how many times you watch it. I have but one question... When is this movie going to be released on DVD??? It's a shame that it hasn't gotten any further than video. I'm sure my fellow Club Paradise fans will agree - WE WANT THE DVD!
