With the outrageous costs of multi-blade shaving cartridges, many guys are beginning to make the switch back to the old-school way of shaving. A good double-edge (DE) razor, brush, shaving soap and a little practice is all that's needed to experience the exceptional closeness that just can't be had with those battery operated, 5-blade monstrosities. With this resurgence in wet-shaving comes the increase in those little nicks and cuts that will inevitably happen and that's why this little Pinaud Styptic Pencil is great to have on hand when it does.

Essentially it looks and feels like a piece of chalk but it's made of alum. For a cut or nick, lightly wet the end and apply. You don't have to keep it pressed there. Just dab it and you're done. It's that fast. It works by constricting the blood vessels to stop bleeding and then it leaves a little white residue over the cut to seal further. Wash off the pencil and then dry it off and it's ready for the next time. I keep mine within easy reach while shaving. After a few minutes I'll wipe off the white residue and I'm good as new. If you've ever seen anyone tear off those little pieces of toilet paper and stick to their face, please get them this.

I bought mine locally at Wal-Mart and the cost was only around 1 dollar. Check out the top shelf on the shaving aisle and if they don't have it you might want to request it. I think soon we're going to start seeing more and more of these old products become popular again. My Pinaud Styptic Pencil did not come in a tube but there is nothing to spill, it's very small and very convenient. I will have to slightly disagree with the product description in that there is a VERY SLIGHT sting. It's not much but it is there.

Whatever method you prefer to whack the little hairs off your face and neck, no shaving kit should be without this...ask your grandfather.

It's a styptic pencil. I paid nearly $5.00 shipping it. Go look at the local pharmacy. Not the big chains, they only stock "popular" stuff, but the little local owned one. Seriously. If you still have one, usually run by a wizened old coot, he'll sell them to you for 99 cents.

As for the item itself, it does the job as well as any styptic pencil ever has that I've used. So... It's on par.

This is the kind of thing that mystified me as a kid when I saw it in my dads shaving kit. Now you find only it in dusty pharmacies and barber shops. I like the stick, it is an old fashioned remedy that has been around for many years. If you knick your face shaving, you simply wet the tip of the styptic stick and dab it lightly on the cut. It then disinfects while stopping the bleeding. It leaves a white film the size of a pea that you can wipe off in 10 minutes. It does not sting. Personally, I use this travel size, which will last for years. Both sizes come in a plastic tube to keep it safe in your shaving kit or medicine cabinet. Use the tube or to store it as it can easily break.

I bought this pencil above others because it was cheap and that's the deal. This is the first styptic pencil I've purchased. The active (aluminum sulfate) seemed common for these, so that seemed to check out fine. I will say that I literally chuckled at the "sting-free" claim on the box, as my first use made me quite aware that this was not the case. The sting is quite quick and after the initial feeling does not return even if you re-touch the spot with the pencil.

I took a star off because I'm not a fan of the tube. The red plug fits the diameter of the plastic tube so well that it can be hard to get it out. I don't insert mine all the way in in order to leave a "ledge" for my fingernail when I need it. A very simple tweak to the shape of the plug or the size would make it much easier to get at when you have wet hands and a nick to get at. I'm not sure the tube lets this dry off the best, but again... this was about a dollar so I'm really not complaining.

I clot fine with any sort of cuts or scrapes. I got this to hopefully stop the bleeding at a much faster pace (heading to work or something). It seems to work for only very minor cuts for me. If I get anything like what a normal shaving cut is, this stuff doesn't seem to work. I just keep bleeding. So it works for a solid 75% of cuts I'd say. I rarely actually cut myself so pretty much anytime I use this, it's also a heads up to change to a new blade. I do recommend getting one. It's cheap and it's worth having in a shave kit.

I have tried everything to stop razor cuts from bleeding. Bits of facial tissue are not an attractive solution. It was after inadvertently leaving a piece of tissue on my face that someone at work mentioned a styptic pencil.

WOW. I am sold. It will probably last a lifetime - even if I use it on minor cuts all over my body. I simply dab the pencil on the cut, and the bleeding stops in no time at all. It rinses clean in water and stores in a plastic container that keeps it ready for the next cut.

If you haven't tried one, please do.
