St. Aubyn's previous books were phenomenal. This one isn't. It doesn't have the wit, the characterization, the plot of the others, but I guess if you choose impending death as your topic, how witty can you be? Although he did manage brilliant wit in his trilogy which included a graphic graphic account of our hero on a drug binge to end all drug binges.
