Book Description

October 30, 2005
The nude body of a man is discovered entombed in the walls of Split Point Lighthouse on the South-East Coast of Australia. Investigating the crime Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte, the half-aborigine detective, wonders why a coffin is moved at night, who was the girl struggling with Dick Lake on the cliff top, and what caused the Bully Buccaneers to deal in death. Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte is the half-Aboriginal protagonist in Upfield's popular Australian mystery series. In this 1951 book, "Boney" is on special assignment to solve a murder in southeastern Australia. Peter Hosking does a good job bringing life to Bonaparte, who is supremely self-confident to the point of arrogance; pedantic; ingratiating to some and insufferable to others; and to modern ears, a racist. Hosking, who is Australian, does as well with the many other characters. He perfectly uses the tight vowels of Australian whites and the gentler speech of the Aboriginals, and his females are as believable as his males. This is a well-paced, involving reading of a dated book. R.E.K. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars Bony is at it again in Victoria, May 1, 2000
I am in the process of reading the entire 33 volume series of Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte. He is one of the most likable characters in fiction. This book takes place in Victoria not far from the Ocean Road. It has a less exotic tone than many of the others such as This Bone is Pointed since it is by the sea and not in the outback and does not involve any aborigines. However, there is a gentle tone as he develops the character of the old woodworker. You will find out what it is like to be fitted for your coffin. (I probably should disclose that I am fascinated by Australia and have a dozen Australia guidebooks.)
