Book Description

July 31, 2008 9 and up4 and upJudy Bolton Mysteries (Book 21)
Judy wonders what has happened to Roberta's father, a sea captain, who writes letters to Roberta. It has been quite some time since Roberta received a letter from Captain Dunn. Roberta suddenly begins to remember snatches of her past-a garden with a stone lantern, flowers, her mother and father. When a strange man and woman show up at the Dobbs home asking about Roberta, Judy instantly dislikes them and wonders about their motive. They claim to be related to Roberta's father and claim that he has died in a shipwreck. After they leave, Judy tries to find Roberta but discovers that Roberta has disappeared. Judy and Peter search for answers to Roberta's strange past, a search that finally leads them to Chicago where they are able to reunite Roberta with her parents.

About the Author

Margaret Sutton was born Rachel Irene Beebe in Odin, Pennsylvania in 1903. She was the daughter of Victor Beebe, a well-known historian, and Estella Andrews Beebe. Being a spirited nonconformist, she dropped out of high school, but in 1920, graduated from the Rochester Business Institute. After graduation, she worked for several years as a secretary and in printing. During that time, she met William Sutton at a church dance in New York City. After a courtship exchanging poems and playing chess, they were married in 1924, and she began writing stories for her husband's daughter, Dorothy. Her first Judy Bolton Mystery was published in 1932 under the pen name Margaret Sutton. Ms. Sutton wove many real events and places into the Judy Bolton stories through the 35-year history of the series. She also wrote numerous stories for children and young adults. She was also active in social causes, joining the historic March on Washington in 1964. In 1965, her husband of more than 40 years died. In 1975, after traveling extensively, she married a long-time family friend, Everett Hunting. They moved to Berkeley, California and made their home there until 1993 when they moved back to Pennsylvania. Mr. Hunting died shortly after they moved. In 2001, at the age of 98, Margaret Sutton died in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, not far from her native Potter County.

4.0 out of 5 stars Margaret Sutton's Clue of the Stone Lantern, March 19, 2001
By
Caroline Parris (E. Falmouth, MA United States) - See all my reviews
Twenty-first in this series which is partially based on real- life events of the author and her friends and family, this mystery story was published in l950. The setting is apparently not too much before that. It is the fifth mystery to be written in which Judy is married. As in a few previous books, this one features a little girl named Roberta, whom Judy has come to know well and to love. In this story, Judy is set on the trail of Roberta's real parents, who have been missing for most of the little girl's life. Roberta inadvertently provides the clue to finding them when she recognizes a stone lantern appearing on a seed package. Like other Margaret Sutton stories, this one is hard to put down and heart-warming. Although it is not my number one favorite, that is only because some of the other books in the series are even more exceptional, and I certainly recommend it, as I do ALL the Judy Bolton books.
