This review is from: Clue - World Of Harry Potter (Toy)
Prior to owning the 2011 Clue World of Harry Potter edition, I was/am an owner of 2008 Clue Harry Potter Edition.
The 2008 version is sometimes challenging because the playing board is designed to look like The Marauder's Map -- that is, brown lettering and figures on a light parchment color. This means there's a certain beige-like blandness to the color scheme, which is sometimes hard to read quickly and easily. In this new 2011 version, the playing board is very colorful, and eliminates that problem. The 2008 version has a large number of smaller squares on which the players move between the "rooms", similar to the more traditional and original Clue playing boards. However, the 2011 version has made fewer and much larger squares on which to move. Presumably this was done to make the game easier to play for younger people; I'm not convinced of the value of this change to the game board. In the 2008 version, you get House Points (HP) tokens, which you lose throughout the game, usually as the result of the actions of The Dark Mark card, and if you lose all of your HP tokens then you're out of the game. This lends a certain urgency to the game -- that is, solve the mystery before you run out of HP tokens. In the 2011 version, you get instead Floo Powder (FP) tokens; you similarly lose them throughout the game, but each can also be traded in for a trip via the Floo Network to teleport you from your current "room" with an active fireplace into any of 7 "rooms" (out of 9 total) with fireplaces. It must be noted that in the 2011 version, if you run out of FP tokens, you continue to play normally (your character just can't use the Floo Network, and must walk everywhere). I liked the 2008 version when it came out, because of it novelty. I like this new 2011 version, but not quite as well, if only because it lacks that novelty (being a retooling of the existing 2008 game).

What I Can Tell You:
The directions were long but thorough. There is a little set up involved. You have to punch out all these little Floo Powder tokens. There are 40 of them. Then we set up the game board by inserting the location wheels into the board. Easy enough but I didn't do it, it was my niece. We got our pencils and sat down to play. My 6 year old asked to play so we included her assuming it would be too hard but she did OK. There are Suspect and Item Tokens we would show her whenever we made an assumption so she could follow along and answer our questions. The hardest part for her was filing out her form in the beginning after we dealt the cards out so my husband helped out. The egg carton is what we use to play Go Fish with her. She can't hold her cards so the carton does that. We shuffled the cards. Selected the ones for the CLUE envelope. Dealt all the rest. Checked off what we had and proceeded to move. There are rules like you can only move horizontally or vertically. You cannot pass through a closed door unless you have a Alohomora Help card. If you land on a star symbol, you take a help card which can give you certain counter acts on the "dark" cards. You can pass through the fireplaces into different rooms by using Floo Powder. It was really fun with fun games pieces. The game board will surely have Potter fans happy. All in all this was a great version of a classic game. We played three games this weekend and I can't wait to play again.

It's not THAT much different than regular clue except for whole "floo" network. I really enjoyed playing because I'm a HUGE Harry Potter nerd.. The other people I played with didn't love it as much because it was hard for them to remember who the characters were, definitely harder to remember "Fenir Greyback, instead of "Scarlet". My one biggest beef with this is that the pieces for the bad guys, and the "weapons" are really lame, just disks of cardboard. This really clutters the board, and they are not as fun and visually entertaining as the die cast pieces in orginal clue. If I start feeling crafty I might make my own, but it would have been nice for the money if they were included!
