This review is from: Clue : the movie (DVD)
Clue is Paramount Pictures' comedic film rendering of the classic Parker Brothers board game of the same name. But don't let that dissuade you from seeing this one. Although you'll recognize the chromatic character names, unlikely murder weapons, and Victorian mansion settings, tracking down the murderer in the movie version of Clue requires a good deal more than a deck of cards and a notepad. (It's a lot more fun this way, too.)

Involving the talents of seven of Hollywood's funniest funny people, including Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White, Christopher Lloyd as Professor Plum, and Tim Curry as Wadsworth, the requisite butler, the film is guaranteed to keep you laughing. The script is packed with sparklingly witty exchanges, such as this one between Wadsworth and an angry Colonel Mustard (Martin Mull):

Mustard: Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests?

Wadsworth: You don't need any help from me.

Mustard: That's right!

Later in the picture, as the by-now-blasé guests glance down at the most recent victim, Mr. Green (Michael McKean) updates the count to "Six murders." Wadsworth's grave response? "This is getting serious." And Wadsworth's explanation of "who killed whom where and with what" at the end of the picture is packed with the impersonations, facial expressions, and things not-quite-British that rank Tim Curry among the funniest Britons ever to defect to Hollywood.

Madeline Kahn, too, liberally sprinkles commentaries, both vocal and facial, into any and all situations, the sheer spontaneity of which make one wonder whether or not they're actually in the script. The line in the show which had me laughing the hardest, anyway, was not really a line at all, but rather a high-pitched, yodeling scream from Mrs. White. (You'll know it when you hear it.) And her operatic descant over the guests' chorus of "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow" had me rolling in the aisle.

Another facet of the movie, disguised by the humor, but every bit as important to one's enjoyment of the film, is the maze of leads, lies, and leaps of logic which ultimately culminates in not one, but three possible answers as to "Whodunnit." And here's the amazing part: each of the three endings (I checked) stands up to close scrutiny of the clues provided earlier in the film. From the time Wadsworth verifies Yvette's mysterious "instructions" until the last pull of the trigger, each minute detail is essential to the plot. A word of warning to the dedicated popcorn-munching detective: the guests at this dinner party are all experts at using comedy to distract. While you're busy laughing at Miss Scarlet in the ballroom, a desperate dinner guest wielding a monkey wrench is hurrying through the secret passage to the study, trying to silence that unfortunate motorist before he says too much....

The film isn't perfect-the physical humor becomes strained at times, and there are a very few lines whose comedic and textual value I question. Still, the film bears enough good comedy and old-fashioned mystery, garnished with a sound track that adds just the right spice to the flavor of both humor and suspense, to earn a "five-star comedy" rating from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Laugh-A-Minute, February 27, 2001
By
This review is from: Clue : the movie (DVD)
This is one of my favorite films of all time. It's loaded with outragous, silly slapstick humor and the entire cast is superb! You'll be amazed at how many of the lines and gags get stuck in your head. I'll never be able to forget the flusterd looks of Mrs. Peacock, the wit and charm of Wadsworth or the subtle facial expressions of Mrs. White. Thankfully I'll be able to see all this and more as Clue is finally presented in anamorphic widescreen! The picture is the best yet of this film since it's initial release, but there are moments when the image appears too soft and the entire presentation leans to the dark side (no Star Wars pun intended). The darkness though, does help to heighten the mystery/suspense aspect of Clue. From a purists point of view it's good that the soundtrack is kept in it's original mono, still I'd greatly enjoy hearing a stero or, even better, a surround sound version in the future. Unfortunately there are only 13 chapter stopsincluded on the DVD. Any film requires at least double this amount to be really effective.

Without a doubt the best feature of this DVD is the multiple endings feature. After you select "play" you will be asked if you would lilke the player to randomly choose one of the three endings for you, or see all three of them at the end. Whoever thought of this feature deserves a raise as it greatly enhances the longevity of the disc and brings the film closer to it's board game roots. Now you have the option of really not knowing who did it until the final scenes play bringing suprise into the untold repeat viewings that are sure to occur.

The technical imperfections mentioned before are slight and I believe are primarilly due to original production decisions and the films age. To make a long review short (too late), this is a must own for any fan of one of the numerous stars, comedy or film firsts. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movies you've probaly never seen, April 26, 2004

This review is from: Clue: The Movie (DVD)
Almost everybody has played the game Clue. We all have heard of Mr.Green, Professor Plum, Miss Scarlett, Col.Mustard, Mrs.White, and Mrs.Peacock. Now we actually get to see the game on screen.

The story to Clue is a great mystery. Six individuals Mr.Green(McKean), Mrs.Peacock(Brannen),Col.Mustard(Mull),Mrs.White(Kahn), Miss Scarlet(Warren), and Pro. Plum(Lloyd) have all received invitations to a mysterious house. They all have been invited to dinner and have no idea while they are there. When they reach the house they discover that the master is not there, but his butler Wadsworth(Curry) and Maid Yvette(Camp) are the only poeple there. The guests are informed that they are there by the invitation of Mr.Boddy. Mr.Boddy is blackmailing them all and thats the only thing in common the six people have. Then people start dying in the home and now it's up to the whole group to see who is doing it and to see if they can get out alive.

This really was a great cast. It had a bunch of big stars from that day. All have pretty good performances in there roles as the character from the game.

Tim Curry gives the best performance of the movie. Curry is a very talented actor. He's been quite underrated in Hollywood. He really takes the role as Wadsworth the Butler and runs with it. He is such a weasal and nobody plays a character like Curry can.

The other actors in the movie really do give good performances in the movie.

The movie is quite funny and has a bunch of slapstick in it. Mull as Col.Mustard is the funniest out of the six characters because he sets himself up to be made fun of so well. The dialogue is also quite funny and when the characters start ranting it gets quite good. John Landis(Blues Brother, Animal House) wrote the story with Johnathan Lynn writing the screenplay. They've combined for a fantastic written movie.

It's a great mystery and the three different endings are fun. You get all three of them on the DVD and all are enjoyable though some are better than others. You really are kept quite clueless as to who has killed who and that again is credited to the writing skills of Landis and Lynn.

Thi is a funny movie. If you like to play Clue the game then you will definetly enjoy this movie. If you like slapstick comedies you will definetly enjoy the movie as well. This is a funny movie that can be watched by the whole family. So go get Clue and be prepared to laugh and have a good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Yep, two corpses ...Everything's fine", June 17, 2003
By
This review is from: Clue [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Okay, I know there's so many reviews for this movie already here, and so my opinion of the movie probably doesn't even need to be here. But I think just the fact that this movie has been reviewed by two hundred people as of now, almost all giving it a 5-star review, is alone a testament to how many people are impressed by this film.

Clue is a Paramount Pictures' whodunit film that puts less emphasis on solving a mystery and more on non-stop laughs, gags, and one-liners. And believe me, there's more comedy packed into this hour-and-a-half than you can shake a stick at. That doesn't mean you can't try to solve the murder case yourself either.

The main theme of clue is quite dark. All the familiar people from the game (Peacock, Green, Scarlet, Mustard, etc.) are invited to a dinner party at a huge mansion. There, it is not only revealed that they are all being blackmailed, but also that it's all being done by the host of the party, Mr. Boddy! Early in the movie, Mr. Boddy is murdered, but there's a problem. The act was committed with the lights turned off in the house, and thus no one knows who has done it. Throughout the course of the movie, several others die, and the guest's efforts to find out who the murderer is also becomes a fight for survival. While the movie has this dark theme, the movie takes the deaths and blackmail so lightly, that it makes you forget that you're laughing at a subject so serious.

Clue takes all the one-dimensional characters from the popular board game and really fleshes them out, giving each one a distinct personality and style. The ensemble cast is one of the best I've ever seen, and each actor really owns their part. I can't imagine anyone but Tim Curry frantically explaining the murder at the end or someone other than the wonderful Madeline Kahn playing the dark black widow, Mrs. White. The rest of the cast is excellent too. They all have excellent timing; their deliverance on all their one-liners is great, and even just their facial expressions alone will have you laughing hysterically at times.

Clue demands repeated viewing, because every time you see the movie you'll notice something different. While the first time you watch it, the movie may come across as being really silly, after watching it again and again, you'll pick out things that you missed. There's a seemingly endless string of gags and sight jokes throughout the movie, and I'm still amazed when I notice new things, even after I've seen it a million times. (whoops, I said I wasn't gonna say that . . . . oh well.) : )

Well, to make a long story short (too late) this is an absolutely wonderful movie. It is a smart, clever comedy, sprinkled with the old-fashioned mystery element, and should be a classic by any cinema-lover's standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly genious pioneer in comedy, February 12, 2000
By
This review is from: Clue [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Clue is a one-of-a-kind comedy bursting at the seams with laughter, lust, and back-stabbing suspense! The amount of talent brought together on camera in this film never ceases to amaze, nor disappoint, its viewers. Tim Curry stars along with an incredible cast of big names living up to their fame and, most certainly, having a great time together in doing so. This film spin-off of the Clue board game brings to life all of its shady , high-profile characters and tosses them into action at a mysterious evening gala. Blackmail is the central theme of the gathering, and all guests have invitations to come settle their affairs with their would-be culprit... at least, that's the basic theme! Things heat up when the resident help and the imposter (or is he?) host soon fall victim to murder, and the entire party bands together to do some hilarious misfit sleuthing. Sherlock Holmes rolls over in his grave, but you'll be rolling on the floor laughing at the seemingly endless barrage of puns, gags, and some of the best one-liners in movie history. All in all, this film combines hilarious and witty comedy with a surprisingly intricate twisting plot, delivered by the unforgettable performance of the perfect cast. This is a must for Tim Curry fans, and any lovers of truly pioneering titles in comedic art. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars When writers didn't have to rely on four letter words..., July 17, 2002
This review is from: Clue: The Movie (DVD)
Clue, starring Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Martin Mull, and others, is a classic 'who dunit' comedy. Based on the board game of the same name, Clue takes a cast of characters named after colors, puts them in a mansion, and then lets them trip over each other as they try to figure out who killed 'Mr. Body'.

One of the most impressive aspects of this movie is that it works as both a mystery and a comedy. Clue is filled with hints, and 'red herrings' to borrow a phrase from the movie. In its original release, Clue was shot with three alternate endings. Different endings were distributed to the theaters. On the VHS copy of the movie, all three movies were added to the end of the movie. You can play the DVD the same way, or select an option for your player to select an ending at random.

It is also rather refreshing to see a comedy that doesn't rely soley on four letter words, bodily functions, sex jokes, and toilet humor to elicit laughs. Clue definitely earns its PG rating, but I wouldn't be ashamed to show this movie to my niece.

My only real complaint about the DVD is that it is sorely lacking in the extras that make DVD's so popular. There is no director's commentary (or a commentary from anyone for that matter), no deleted scenes, and no making of featurette. If Paramount follows the lead of many other titles released on DVD, I can't help but imagine there will be a 'Collector's Edition' of Clue released in the future with many of these features added, forcing the true fan to shell out [more money] to get the 'ultimate' copy of the movie.

Clue is an entertaining, funny, mystery and comedy. I've viewed it a dozen times and I'm just starting to catch all the jokes and running gags. Tim Curry's role as Wadsworth is fantastic and his expostion in all three endings as he reveals who did it and how is priceless.

I would recommend this movie to any comedy or light hearted mystery fan.

I remember seeing this movie in the theater when i was 5 years old and i fell in love with it. i bought the board game and when it came out on tape i watched it like a 100 times. very funny and inventive movie. i love it that they decided to make a movie version of the classic board game with an all star cast and made it very funny. The story is about the 6 notorious characters getting invited to boddy mansion over a black mail matter and discover mr. body the weapons are then introduced then the fun begins. Everyone of these actors are commic gienous and played these characters right down to the T. col. mustard is Martin Mull, Eilleen Brennan is Mrs. Peacock. Tim Curry is the wadsworth the buttler, Leslie ann Warren is Miss Scarlett(perfect casting) Mrs. White is the wonderfull Madaline Kahn(wonderfully played) Mr.Green is the ever funny Michael Mckean and prof. plum is Christopher lloyd. The video and DVD versions have three surprise endings and the theatrical ending was different in each theater. alot of odd ball sittuations and silly circumstances all surrounding murder. rent this or buy it if youve seen it. its a very fun movie and it can be watched over and over again just for fun. so to make the long story short(To late!) 4.0 out of 5 stars WHAT IT LACKS IN PLAUSIBILITY, IT MAKES UP IN WIT, July 30, 2004
This review is from: Clue: The Movie (DVD)
Murder, blackmail, suspects...the film has all the usual jazz in spades.

But the very first surprise comes at the outset, even before the film starts, when the DVD presents you with two unusual choices. Let me refrain from spoiling the precise nature of this choice for the reader, but it sets up a fabulous precedent of quaintness that the film itself not only lives up to but quite amusingly transcends.

The 'plot' seems a bit daintily constructed at first, then its ingenuity comes clean. Some very cunning thinking must have gone into it, as is also amply evident in the witty banter strewn throughout. If you find it difficult to hold up in the first quarter of the film, well, hang on. Some daft quirks aside (animal poop, cleavage jiggles, supposedly comical overacting etc) the film does well in keeping your attention.

While the death statistics of characters may tilt it somewhat in the favor of being too black a comedy, the film is a veritable assembly-line of one-liners. For that reason alone, if nothing else, I recommend Clue as a fairly decent purchase. You'll perhaps truly comprehend the movie no earlier than the third viewing anyway.

Let me preface this by saying that I have always loved this movie in the VHS format. I have owned two copies because, basically I wore out the first one. The top notch comedic performances of Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Martin Mull, et. al. never fail to get me laughing and to make a long story short (too late!) I couldn't wait for the movie to reach this format (DVD). My expectations may have been a little too high though. I really never expected the sound to be SATNDARD MONO. I have a top of the line in-home theater system and to hear all the sound come from the front center cube was no small shock, it wouldn't even simulate surround sound well. The picture is crisp with only slight artifacts to be noted. The bonus material...hello... what bonus material! The theatrical preview hardly counts as bonus material. I love the movie but the creators of this disk should re-think what the consumers (like me) expect after waiting so long for this movie to reach this format.
