Product Description

From Children's Software Revue® -- "Subscribe Now!"

This engaging learning adventure is one of the best we've seen to date. Kids go off on a journey to the Numerian Rain Forest with two onscreen characters, Santiago and Joni. Joni's Uncle Horace has been mysteriously kidnapped by Mathra, a flying creature who's terrorizing the forest. The creature is supposedly living in a lost city where it keeps its prisoners. To gain entry to the city's locked gates, Santiago and Joni must find the two halves of a key. In order to complete the adventure, kids play approximately 20 activities, each of which is necessary to progress through the forest's paths and collect clues. The activities are all very well designed and are nicely focused on "real" applications of math and reading. Kids have to, for instance, balance a log on a bridge by matching sums on either end. In another activity, they measure the perimeter of a pit to help rope it off. In yet another game, they help birds fly to their appropriate locations by reading map legends. There are many excellent logic and problem-solving activities. Kids also have to add, subtract and multiply numbers to unveil clues. Teachers and parents will appreciate the readily available progress reports and the massive amount of content. In fact, for some of our testers, the game play and content was so extensive that they became impatient for the game's conclusion. Additionally, while specific help for problems was available, kids didn't always discover its existence. On the whole, though, this is an excellent program with plenty of cleverly designed activities providing valuable math, reading and logic practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect blend of education and fun, May 6, 2000
This review is from: ClueFinders 3rd Grade [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
Both of my children have thoroughly enjoyed the Cluefinder Series, especially this 3rd Grade Edition. I have tried many similar products but have found them to be either to heavy on the education, thereby losing the kids interest, or too heavy on the fun and they don't really learn much. In this product, the children get to work with a small group of kids (whom they may know already from other Cluefinders adventures)as they seek to solve the story/mysteries. I love the way the kids get rewarded for progress during their journey, providing even more incentive to continue. And the best part of all: they really do learn! During dinner one evening, my son showed off some of the math skills he had learned quite far in advance of his school classmates. And it wasn't just rote memorization. He had really learned the concepts. My hat is off to The Learning Company!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps the kids busy!, January 13, 2000

This review is from: ClueFinders 3rd Grade [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
My son absolutely loves this game! The first time he played I practically had pry him off the chair to go to bed. He really wanted to keep on gathering clues to reach the end challenge. The entire game teaches kids how to plan wisely so that they have enough sneeze berries to rescue the professor. I'd recommend it to any third grader.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son loves it!, July 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: ClueFinders 3rd Grade [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
My son loves this game. His approval means a lot, because he has practically every educational game for his skill level and can really compare. He is now asking me to buy him the 4th, 5th and 6th grade version of Clue Finders, so that when he is ready he could start playing them right away.
