The wondrous 2009 debut record from Clues. Co-founders Alden Penner and Brendan Reed have been quietly nurturing this project in Montreal since the demise of their respective bands, Unicorns and Les Angles Morts. Penner's voice, guitar and unique lyrical vision now guide Clues, with humble authority, originality and intent. Wedded to Reed's own superlative compositional and arranging acumen, the band delivered sporadic and fantastic local performances through 2008. They then entered the Hotel2Tango studio to lay down eleven songs in a feverish session during a Montr‚al winter deep freeze. The resulting album radiates a very special warmth and urgency, full of secrets, smiles, snarls and sing-a-longs.

A superb album is what we can expect from a Canadian band formed by consecrated musicians, like ex-members from Arcade Fire (Brendan Reed) and from Unicorns (Alden Penner). This self-titled debut album is a great surprise from the begin to end. I first listened on-line and decided to buy as a gift to my girlfriend. But when it has came to me I listened some times again and thought that it's a so much great sound that if I don't get the album to myself I probably would sorry in the future. So, that's why I recommend it, more to yourself that as a gift! =)

I bought this for my brother, and he ended up loving it and recommending it to me... having listened to the whole thing several times, I've fallen in love with this album in all its offbeat glory. I mean offbeat like 'odd,' by the way.
Favorite tracks- Remember Severed Head, You Have My Eyes Now, Crows, Ledmonton
Good for anyone who can appreciate the unusual. I can listen to this album over and over.
