Book Description

June 1998
The complete illustrated guide to coaching tee ball baseball, encompassing an unprecedented range of information from keeping the game in perspective and how to hold that essential first team meeting to detailed instructions on drills, hitting, fielding, and strategy.

So many parents find themselves coaching tee ball teams without the benefit of experience and instruction. Even experienced former baseball players quickly and unfortunately discover that coaching tee ball and teaching baseball fundamentals to tee ball-aged children is the ultimate coaching challenge for which they need a whole new bag of tricks and techniques. This book takes the mystery out of that endeavor with great insight and detail.

From the Publisher

"How To Coach Tee Ball Without Going INSANE" is an easy-read, filled to the brim with penetrating and utterly essential information of value to any coach. The real value of this book, however, is not that it helps make Tee Ball coaches successful, but that it helps make baseball players out of tee ball players.

Coaches of baseball players of all ages will be pleasantly surprised to find that the coaching principles applied in this book steadfastly adhere to a guiding principle that Mr. Doss maintained throughout his tenure as a coach: that the techniques, skills, and drills not only help tee ball coaches and players find success in the game of tee ball, but also that these fundamentals relate directly to skills players need to rely upon as they progress to regular baseball in later years. Hence, you'll not find tips on teaching "the tee ball uppercut swing," nor will you read strategies that work well on the tee ball field, but have no value to good baseball players. The drills, techniques, practices, and philosophy described in this book will still be useful to players as they mature in the baseball ranks.

Baseball coaches and league administrators would do well to encourage their Tee Ball coaches to read this book -- it will likely have a tremendous favorable impact on the kind of baseball players they promote to their older leagues.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too advanced for young Tee-ballers, February 25, 2004

TeeBall Coach (Tulsa, OK United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Coach Tee Ball Without Going INSANE (Paperback)
This book has some merit, but for the most part, many of the tips and drills seem to be written for the older Tee-Ballers, probably at least 7 year olds. If you're looking for a beginners book to help 5 year olds, there are probably better ones.

For example, here is the quote on throwing a ball:

"As the arm travels rearward to begin the throw, the wrist and elbow should be rotated to put the ball to the rear (with the hand and wrist under the ball) at the furthest rearward travel of the ball. Once the arm begins its forward motion the hand and elbow are rotated again to put the ball to the front with the hand on top of the ball. The arm needs to stay up until the ball is released. The advancing foot needs to be planted in line with the back foot."

This is just a small part of the "throwing" section. So, you can see parts of it can be complex to understand for adults - not to mention 5 year olds.

Other sections on coaches, parents, newsletters, etc. provide valuable information for the first time Tee-Ball coach, but the rest of the book makes you think the writer forgot about the first year or two of his coaching days.

When I was conscripted to act as my son's T-Ball Manager I didn't believe I was up to the task. Thank G-d I am a bibliophile. So I went to ...pick this book up along with several others.

Needless to say the book gave me a framework to train the kids and help their parents and it's making T-Ball an enjoyable experience for all of us.
