Editorial Reviews

Forget Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls--the team that really ruled the late '80s and early '90s was the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles, led bravely and bumblingly by Coach Hayden Fox, played with pitch-perfect timing by Craig T. Nelson. In the first season of Coach, the characters are introduced and take off full-tilt: Coach's long-estranged daughter, Kelly (Clare Carey), decides to attend his college to re-forge a relationship with him; his spunky newscaster girlfriend, Christine (a sparkling Shelley Fabares), tries to balance love and work; and the dudes in Coach's locker room provide hapless laffs by the helmetful. The writing is crisp and the acting, led by Nelson's endearing, Emmy-winning performance, is great across the board. The women around Coach seem to have their acts together far better than do the men, which leads to classic sitcom misunderstandings. Another highlight is Assistant Coach Luther Van Dam (Jerry Van Dyke), a guy's guy with no internal censoring ability. The Limited Edition includes all 13 Season One episodes, a "sneak peak bonus" episode from Season Two, a cool documentary called The Great '80s TV Flashback (beware of flying shoulder pads), and a cute fake pigskin package. Now let's get on out there and show what the Screaming Eagles can do! --A.T. Hurley

3.0 out of 5 stars Coach a rocky start but showed better longetivity. March 5, 2006
Format:DVD
Season 1 for Coach began on ABC in Feburary 1989 as a mid-season replacement show. This show is really funny and made a name for Craig T. Nelson. I really like to see this show in it's early days when Hayden, Luther, Dauber and company laugh things up for the Minnesota Screaming Eagles! Here's a guide for season 1.

1.) Kelly & The Professor 2/28/89
Kelly tells Hayden she had a date with a faculty member, and he wants to know who.

2.) Pilot episode 3/1/89
Kelly's return to Minnesota for college awakens Hayden's paternal instincts, disrupting his relationship with Christine.

3.) Kelly, Meet Christine 3/8/89
Christine demands Hayden be truthful with Kelly about their relationship.

4.) I'm in Love With a Boy Named Stuart 3/15/89
Hayden gets to meet Stuart, Kelly's new boyfriend, at dinner, but the more he gets to know him, the less he likes him.

5.) The Loss Weekend 3/22/89
A losing streak makes Hayden unpleasant company for Christine.

6.) Gambling for Meat 4/5/89
Hayden suspends Luther for 30 days for gambling when he bets against the team and wins a steak at the Touchdown Club; but Luther think he has been fired, and takes another job.

7.) 19 Candles 4/12/89
Hayden plans a quiet birthday celebration for Kelly, who invites Stuart.

8.) Parent's Weekend 4/19/89
Christine is seized by an uncontrollable urge to get a look at Hayden's ex-wife, who's come up for Parents' Weekend.

9.) I'm Sorry I Told You My Wife Was Dead 4/26/89
Hayden consoles a wealthy alumnus' widow to secure a substantial donation.

10.) Define Romance 5/3/89
Hayden feels threatened when Christine dates another.

11.) Who's Team is it Anyway? 5/17/89
Although Hayden needs a victory in his last game for a winning season, he may be forced to bench his star player for skipping practice.

12.) Hoot, Hoot, Hike 5/31/89
The poetry of football is turned into ballet by Kelly's dance instructor, who envisions a pas de deux with technical advisor Hayden.

13.) Dauber's Blow Out 6/7/89
Anti-fun Riley Pringle of the Conduct Committee joins Hayden in supervising Dauber's season-ending party.

This is the best show on TV and I'm glad Universal was able to give recognitizion. I hope to look for future seasons real soon!

Fans of the television series Coach will be glad to know that the shows first season is available in a special limited edition. The Coach The First Season-Limited Edition DVD set is really awesome. The DVD's arrive in a lift up playbook style notebook that is made of the same material as a football and the design looks like a football. The lift up flap inside of the notebook features football plays.

Inside of the notebook, are CD like sleeves that hold the discs. Two discs total arrive with the set. Inside of the notebook is a "playbook." The cover of the playbook says "Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles Play Book. Inside of the playbook, are episode descriptions for all fourteen episodes included with the set. The DVD set includes all thirteen season one episodes and a bonus episode from the shows second season ("Homewreckers").

Similar to other recent Universal releases, Coach The Complete First Season DVD set includes a featurette about the greatest television shows of the '80s.

Coach premiered on television in 1989. The series is about a college football coach (Craig T. Nelson), who his fair share of challenges dealing with his adult daughter and friends. Series stars also include Shelley Fabares and Jerry Van Dyke.

Considering that Coach is not considered a television blockbuster, I appreciate the effort put into the limited edition set.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT entertainment!! September 23, 2006
By Nathan
Format:DVD
This is one of the best sitcoms ever. I was born in 76, and this show premiered in 89. I never watched it when it first aired. I think, because I didn't like football (and still don't like football), that I wouldn't enjoy a sitcom about a football coach. So I never gave it a chance. Until a few years ago, I seen a few reruns on TV and was hooked. The DVD release is a treat for me, because I don't have the USA network, and therefore haven't been able to even watch reruns. If you are a Seinfeld fan, or Curb Your Enthusiasm fan...and like sophisticated smart comedy, you will like this series! And if you are like me, and don't care for football...don't worry, you won't even notice the parts about football, because there is so much more going on besides that!!
