5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the 1st time youth coach, October 20, 2000
This review is from: Coach Soccer:Everything You Need to [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"If you don't coach your kid's soccer team, s/he won't have a team" - So you just got drafted like the rest of us! But soccer was something only communists did when you were a kid - what now?? This is the tape to get you started for coaching if you know nothing at all. I am recommending it to my soccer league for all the 1st time coaches we draft every year. After you've seen it 3-5 times, you will probably be done with it and may want to donate it to your soccer league for the next poor parent. Then the follow-up tapes I would recommend are "Play Like a Legend" and "FUNdamental Soccer" (see fundamentalsoccer.com) Almost any tape will give you some techniques you can use as a player, the trick is finding something that teaches you how to make it fun for kids whose attention span is measured in microseconds.

Here's my secret about soccer practice - it should be practicing soccer! Sounds obvious but mostly what I see is kids practicing lining up behind cones, practicing running laps, practicing dribbling between cones..., etc., etc. This is roughly akin to practicing violin by lifting weights. Those who grow up in soccer countries talk about playing street soccer with anything that would roll - they don't remenisce about setting up cones! Just as practicing violin means you are always playing violin, so soccer practice should always involve playing soccer - maybe with special rules like you can't score until you've passed the ball, or touched it 3 times, or whatever it is your team needs to work on, but it needs to be soccer, and it needs to be fun. Do that, and you are way ahead of 80% of the coaches I see.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good instructional tape for first time coaches., June 23, 1999

I found this video very helpful in getting me prepared to coach my daughter's rec team. It did a nice job of demonstrating all the basic soccer skills. I especially liked the "soccer keys". For example, "fast start... slow arrival" was perfect for explaining defending.

4.0 out of 5 stars This tape is for those who don't know anything about soccer., July 30, 1999

I read some of the reviews on this tape before I purchased it. Some gave it great reviews, others hated it. I know why. If you know the basics of soccer, this tape is not for you. In my case it was very helpful. The information provided is instructionally sound. I now watch professional games and see why they call it 'the simple game'. This video works for me.
