5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about a Great Man by the Great Man!
Coach Wooden is a man I have admired as a sport's fan. I was in college during Coach Wooden's unbelievable run as the coach of so many NCAA championships while at UCLA. But, what I didn't know, until reading this book, what an amazing teacher he was to his students (athletes) and to those who had the priviledge of spending time with Coach away from the court. 1.0 out of 5 stars Correct Cover - Wrong Book!
Received book and was looking forward to giving it to my son for Christmas because he follows John Woodens work. To our suprise when he opened this gift on Christmas, he opened the Book saw the Wooden cover and then opened it to find out the book was some Dale Waltrip Nascar book. It had nothing to do with the outer Cover "Coach Wooden" - disappointed :-( They should...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about a Great Man by the Great Man!, November 19, 2003

This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
Coach Wooden is a man I have admired as a sport's fan. I was in college during Coach Wooden's unbelievable run as the coach of so many NCAA championships while at UCLA. But, what I didn't know, until reading this book, what an amazing teacher he was to his students (athletes) and to those who had the priviledge of spending time with Coach away from the court. Coach Wooden shares his thoughts, his philosophies, his heart in this very well-written book. But the added bonus is that the reader gets a chance to hear from one of his assistance at UCLA, who adds some light into this man's dedicated life. Jay Carty, former college basketball star and LA Lakers' player, and author of several inspirational books, shares his humor and wisdom along side Coach Wooden. The tandem is irresistible. You won't want to buy one - you'll want to buy several to share with others who are fans' of basketball or participants of the game of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Son Asks For Wooden's Book!, November 19, 2003
This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
When I ask my kids, "What do you wanna read tonight?" They say, "ONE ON ONE!" They love it because it's funny. I love it because it has great life lessons. I also bought this book as a gift for college students. It's been a popular gift among my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practice and Love at core of his coaching success, March 2, 2004
By
This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
I am impressed that John Wooden put his highest priority on the character of the players entrusted to him. He would never allow his players to criticize one another and took personal responsibility as a coach for his students' improvements.

He says that Love as described in 1 Corinthians 13 is the most important goal for life's center. What great wisdom this 90+ year old wise one leaves for us.

The Cross of Christ was held secretly in his palm as he led every game. What humble man who made sure that this book would not place him on a pedestal; but rather, the LORD of Love as the core teacher and Top Coach of all of life!

Truly impressive!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best coaches, shares with a great author, September 4, 2004
This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
Although this is written as a daily devotional, when I got my copy I could not put it down until I read it all. I still go through it day by day! I have also used some of the writings in teaching the teen class my wife and I run.

This is a great book, and not just for fans of coach John Wooden!!

5.0 out of 5 stars You can never learn all there is to learn from Coach Wooden, November 9, 2009
It never fails to amaze me that I learn a great deal with each new book about or by Coach Wooden. This one falls into that category, I learned more from and about this Great Coach.

I liked the format of the book. The short, one or two pages, chapters made it easy to pick up, read a couple of pages, and put the book down to ponder about what you had just read or simply to go and do other tasks. Each chapter is numbered for a single day, making it a book that can be read one chapter a day, allowing the reader to focus on the thoughts of Wooden for one day before moving on to the next day's passage.

My favorite passage was from Day 16, Walking Your Talk, something we all need to do a better job of trying to do.

This is yet another great book about Wooden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basketball Coach to Life Coach: Wooden One on One worth the read!, August 28, 2009
This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
This short volume is rich with Coach Wooden's stories from his coaching career and life experience that guided him to a long, illustrious career as a coach and then as an author and lecturer. These vignettes and the reflections from former player Jay Carty provide inspiration for the reader's daily life and direction as we "coach" others who are important in our lives. The couplets are presented in a format for a daily 5 minute read for those with busy days. Carthy's reflections are rich in scripture references that provide a medium for contemplation during the course of one's day.
Coach Wooden One on One is a worthy, practical read for parents, spouses, coaches, teachers, those in ministry and those who pursure a spiritual connection in their daily lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Star of the Team Is the Team, February 9, 2008
This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
As Peter Drucker was to management, John Wooden was to coaching. A master at mentoring his teams during his 40-year coaching career from 1948 to 1975, Wooden's UCLA basketball teams won 10 NCAA national championships, including seven in a row! ESPN named him the Greatest Coach of the 20th Century. He preached team spirit. "The star of the team is the team. `We' supercedes `me'."

Recently the Los Angeles Times asked sports readers, "If you could have dinner with a local sports personality, whom would you choose?" Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Tom Lasorda, USC football coach Peter Carroll, Serena and Venus Williams, David Beckham and Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully all made the Top 10 list. But it was former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, now 97, who received the most votes!

Co-authored by Wooden and Jay Carty (read Jay's hilarious account of his brief Lakers career), this wonderful book includes 60 one-page insights from the Coach, with 60 one-page color commentaries by Carty.

It's the perfect book for leaders-on-the-run, who need just the right snippet for a staff meeting, motivational talk or article. Topics include: First Things First, Powerful Principles, Overcoming Adversity, Everyone's a Teacher, Buts and Promises, Going Beyond Good Intentions, After You've Learned It All, Avoiding Burnout, and Making the Right Mistakes. The book includes Wooden's famed Pyramid of Success chart.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't get enough of Jay Carty's books., November 29, 2005
This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
Jay has teamed up with a legendary coach and produced an incredible devotional. This book, as well as Jay's other One-on-One books, is a keeper; not to be read just once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coach Wooden One On one, February 4, 2006
This review is from: Coach Wooden One-on-One (Hardcover)
Having read several of Jay Carty's books now I have to say he is an incredibly inspiring writer and person to say the least. I am so excited each month as I check for new "stuff" from Jay Carty as it is always refreshing and different yet always connected to God with a three stranded cord. If you haven't been a reader of his books for long there are many to choose from and this writer never stops searching for Gods will in his daily efforts to continue to provide hearty reading material for all groups and all stages from salvation, and growth to a mature level of one's spiritual walk. I highly recommend anything he puts his hands on because I know the hand of God is on him. Some of what I have read and or listened to on tape are:"Discovering your natural talents", "Counter Attack: taking back ground lost to sin", "Playing with fire", "Something's fishy Getting rid of the carp in your life","Coach Wooden One on One", "Coach Wooden's Piramid of success", Darrell Waltrip - One on One, "Mike Singletary- One on One" all keeping me captivated from cover to cover!
