Less than I hoped for...,

This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success : 101 Tips from a Personal Coach for Reaching Your Goals at Work and in Life (Paperback)
I have read many, many self help books over the past decade. Some of these books are classics, others are not. This book (for me at least) falls in the "not classic" category: just too much fluff for me. Normally I would have just donated this book to a local charity and moved on to another book. However, I feel that I must add my comments about this book, to add more balance to the other reviews found here. Many of Talane's tips are common sense, and would be helpful to someone just starting out on the road to self improvement. Some of the tips are just plain wacky. For example, in tip 20: Feng Shui Your Home and Office, we are invited to make sure the front entrance door of our house never opens to face a bathroom. If it does, we are advised to keep the door closed. Great tip, for modesty reasons as well as for Feng Shui. We also learn that we should "never design or buy a house with a bathroom in the center of the house; it will drain out all the energy." She doesn't know why she does these things, she does just does these things because they "work". One of the other tips that struck me as strange was the advice to identify our needs. As an example, she mentiones that some people are compulsive shoppers because they want to feel needed. If this is our need, we are invited to ask people to let us know how cherished we are for 4 to 6 weeks... that should be enough to stop the compulsive shopping. Much of the book seemed a bit too simplistic for me. One other personal issue: each tip is prefaced with a quote from some great thinkers... however, some are dialog clips from TV episodes like Rossanne and Mamma's Family. Those types of quotes are not untelling of the level of content you will find in this book. Like I said, if this is the first self improvement book you purchase, you will find a fairly shallow treatment of many wide ranging topics... most of which should help you begin your self improvement path. Personally, I could not force myself to finish the book: I only made it to page 174. If you do purchase this book, don't stop with this one, keep going on to deeper, more comprehensive works.

I wish I could give more than five stars. I have a library of over 2,000 self help books, and this is by far one of the best I have read AND taken action on. Usually I read a book and put it on the shelf. This book prompts you to take action. The author walks you through getting rid of energy drains in your life, setting up personal boundaries that may have slipped, and getting your health, finances, relationships - your entire life back in order and in balance. Even if you just read the book and take one action, you will change your life for the better. Give it a try. There is no filler or fluff here - just concise, constructive actions to take to improve your life.

Changes I can make,
By M McCubbin (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success: 101 Tips for Reaching Your Goals at Work and in Life (Hardcover)
The best thing about this book is that the authors suggestions not only sound good on paper, but envisioning doing them doesnt seem either daunting nor ludicrous, but in fact, feasible and even, gads, smart. This book is not idiotic pap about 'have a positive attitude' but actually provides manageable steps any human being can take to, at the very least, make living easier and more manageable. The author's advice can be applied at work and at home, and, while it's still too early to tell for sure, I believe some of those quick, easy changes have already made my life easier. On the whole I hate self-help career books because they provide too many platitudes followed by suggestions that my boss would not be pleased to see in his office. TM's suggestions are real-world ideas, for actual human beings with actual jobs and Dilbert bosses. She makes sense on a rational level as well as a functional one. I don't see this book sitting gathering dust on my shelf anytime soon. I see myself rereading it a few pages a day for the next ten years. Thanks, TM, for this useful tool.

What can I say? Except that this book is the hands down best thing I have bought for myself...ever! The advice is extremely pragmatic and you'll find yourself doing things to improve your life before you even finish the first chapter. The seemingly small tasks you'll undertake usuing this book will yield BIG results -- everything from getting out of debt to communicating more effectively to looking better. She does a great job of explaining how you can do some elements of the program that seem expensive and indulgent in low-cost ways. **NOTE: The majority of the tips do not require any money at all.I am living proof that using Talane's methods work. Before this book, I was hopelessly in debt, making less than I deserved, looking and feeling downtrodden and depressed. Six months later, my credit is great, debts manageable, I make more money, enjoy my job more, I have hired an image consultant, I get manicures every week, and things just keep getting better. You don't have to do every step in order or do all 101 at once. And you don't have to be rich. Talane helps you build a strong foundation and then take steps to reach your potential. I can't explain it, but you will find yourself taking better care of yourself than you ever thought possible...and getting out of debt, making more money, with more confidence, looking better, in a cleaner home, more relaxed, and enjoying your life more than ever before. If you can't afford to hire Talane herself to coach you, get this book. She has been very generous with sharing her coaching techniques in this wonderful book.

I picked up the book because I was interested in life coaching as a career as well as in useful self-help/life improvement tips. Well, taking the author's words and advice to heart, I also got a better, happier life! The book is divided into chapters of steps to take in order to move towards your ideal life - personal organization, self-care, career, relationships, money management, etc. Although you are supposed to do the actions as you read them, I read the book through cover to cover first (which I recommend). Knowing all of the steps from the outset really helped to get started on the right foot when I went back the second time and started doing the steps. Plus it's exciting to see all that you will be working on and how it will change your life! Besides an overall excellent program, the author's writing is conversational and very easy to read; the success stories are motivational and really hit home the points the author conveys. Beware - the life changes don't happen overnight. It takes belief in the system, hard work, and consistency. But my life has not been the same since reading this book. I've become a lot healthier physically and mentally, improved on all of my relationships including my marriage, moved to where I really want to live, and am pursuing the career of my dreams. I don't think I would have had the tools and the courage to do all of it without this book, and I can't imagine where I'd be now without it. This is a book to keep in your library, to return to time and again, to reference, and to give to your family and friends. Read it, believe it, do it, and change your life!

I picked this book up in a bookstore and was thinking about purchasing it. I put the book back two separate times. I really did not have the extra money for the book, but am so glad I bought it. It was a constant source of information and inspiration. I couldn't put it down. I am so glad I made the investment, it was well worth the money. Talane has a straight forward approach to writing that makes you feel more like a friend than just a reader. I thouroughly enjoyed her book, and would recommend it to anybody I know.

Excellent strategies for life success,
By Kenneth L. Campbell (Freehold, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success: 101 Tips for Reaching Your Goals at Work and in Life (Hardcover)
Coach Yourself to Success is a wonderful book that will dramatically alter the life of anyone who reads it, if you are open to the suggestions offered here. Even though many would say that I am already successful, in many areas of my life I know that I have not lived up to my true potential. I have read a number of other books that have helped me, especially to cultivate a more spiritual approach to life. This book, however, combines the spiritual and the practical in a way that I have not encountered before. It is based on high principles and spirituality, but contains so much practical advice that can be employed on a daily basis. I have only begun to implement the suggestions offered and I already see it making a big difference for me. Talane Miedaner helps you to see that it is possible to achieve everything you want to in life without sacrificing personal happiness, relationships, or inner peace. This book will open up a whole new world for you and help you to see that every day can represent an exiciting new beginning. It also includes suggestions for further reading or help in specific areas. I cannot say enough about what a wonderful book this is and what a joy it is to get to know Talane through her book.

Life Changing!,

This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success: 101 Tips for Reaching Your Goals at Work and in Life (Hardcover)
I purchased this book as a precursor to coaching with Talane. I agree with the basic philosophy that Talane shares -- that you have to have your life "cleaned up" on all levels (ie., mentally, spiritually, etc.) before you can attract success in these areas. By illiminating the things that drain your energy, such as tolerations, you free yourself up to have more energy to put toward your goals. All of the above information is delivered in an upbeat and down-to-earth manner. I feel that working with Talane, combined with the tips in the book, have set me on the path of getting my life in great shape. Highly recommended!

Talane's method to achieving your goals is really refreshing! It's not the usual way where you work yourself to the bone in order to get results. And you know what? It works!
