I enjoyed this book. As a young investor, it was immensely helpful in describing the different financial products available to me including pros and cons of each. 1.0 out of 5 stars Preaching is one thing but practicing is another
I picked up the book with great enthusiasm and read it with great enthusiasm. While the book contains some valuable information, the presentation of information is poor. The irony is that the wisdom the author provides in the book are contrary to what he practices in real life. Customer satisfaction is at the bottom of the list of things this author practices in real life.

I enjoyed this book. As a young investor, it was immensely helpful in describing the different financial products available to me including pros and cons of each. I would highly recommend this to any parent who wants to get their children into investing at a younger age (I'm in my early 20's) as it has a straight forward approach that is particularly helpful for the "uninitiated."

That being said, there are a couple of downsides. This is certainly not a book for someone who has a pretty good understanding of products and ways to allocate their portfolio. While Moglia mostly does a good job of explaining pros and cons of the different financial vehicles as I mentioned above, he seems to skim past implications of certain market factors. For example, in a discussion about bond yield curve, he explains how to look at the chart, but gives little direction in terms of what each kind of curve implies about what is happening in the bond market that causes this or even what's happening in the overall financial market that causes this. The other slight problem, is that it does have a slight hint of salesmanship to it, directing readers to the Ameritrade website. While a seasoned investor will know what works best for them, a basic investor doesn't necessarily have a full picture of different financial planning tools available to them. He also drives you towards Exchange Traded Funds, which while they are a powerful tool for many, may not be right for everyone.

At the end of the day, this should be part of any investor's library as they're just starting out, but shouldn't be viewed as the bible.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginner investors, July 13, 2005

This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success : Winning the Investment Game (Hardcover)
I think this book is a wonderful tool for people who are interested in investing their money but don't understand their options, especially 20-somethings. It explains the different type of investments out there along with pros and cons of each. This book makes investing less intimidating and even provides resources to help you get started. This book was like a pep talk for me - it provided instructions, clear explanations and encouragment. Towards the end of the book you get the feeling that this is just a marketing tool to drive you towards Ameritrade/Amerivest products. That said, by no means should this be the only book you read, but it's a great starting point.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good primer for new investors or those who want to learn more, August 28, 2005
This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success : Winning the Investment Game (Hardcover)
The book is about becoming successful in investing and Moglia uses sports analogies to explain concepts that are complicated or a puzzlement to people like me.

The introduction keeps my attention, so I think I'm in for a good ride. After seeing the Game Plan page at the end of each chapter, I start reading the bulleted list first because it reviews the main points of the chapter and lets me know what to expect in the chapter.

The handy glossary provides useful for the novice who may not be familiar with the terms used in the book and in the investment world. As always when reading any book offering financial advice, the reader must remember that the judgments offered are the author's and others might disagree with some of the concepts.

Coach Yourself to Success is a great primer for new investors or those who have little or no knowledge about investments. It also provides good brush-up text for more experienced investors who may want or need to analyze their portfolios. As the author explains, you should continuously keep up and change your allocations as circumstances dictate. The writing is clear, the concepts simple and the advice down-to-earth and basic. Most individual investors will find the book a practical resource.

This book is packed with important information for new investors from one of the most respected people in the investment world. I have recommended this book to many of my clients who are sports fanatics and they found it to be useful, practical and engaging. The "Game Plan" page at the end of each chapter reviews the main points and the glossary serves as a quick and easy reference.

This book is so informative for the different types of financial investing. It is also laid out in a way that is so easy to understand - which is very important because alot of money stuff can be confusing and overwhelming. I have recommended this book to so many people already - all of which have found this to be a great read and a great way to learn about new products and what type of funding they are best for. A must have if you are just getting into investing or want to know more about investing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on the basics, November 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success : Winning the Investment Game (Hardcover)
Very helpful to gain a basic understanding of securities and gives you a framework to build upon. I can relate well to the author's coaching metaphor and enjoy his sense of humor. This is a good read for anyone looking for assistance in understanding the world of investing. The only caveat I would say, is keep in mind it was written in 2005--a lot has happened since then--we are now in uncharted waters. I was fully aware it was not a current book when I purchased it--it did what I expected it to--it explained Stocks, Bonds, bond ratings, Mutual Funds, Exchange Traded Funds, etc. It gives many Internet site references for helpful tools throughout the book. Highly recommended for beginners.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointment, August 29, 2007
This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success : Winning the Investment Game (Hardcover)
I have read a little of the book and find Mr. Moglia writes well but the truth is that Ameritrade's business practices leave a lot to be desired given my experience with them.
Ameritrade holds little value in the individual customer.
Coaching football and being a CEO are not the same. You can be mean to your players but you need to treat your investors with respect.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Many Football Analogies, December 28, 2006
This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success : Winning the Investment Game (Hardcover)
Moglia's approach to the topic is very well thought out. He covers all the angles of investing in the markets. However, the football analogies are overdone and unnecessary. His credentials and his exposition should be based on what he has done in the business world, not on what he did on a football field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great investment aid., June 13, 2005
This review is from: Coach Yourself to Success : Winning the Investment Game (Hardcover)
This book is a great book, especially to the readers who are just learning how to invest. It gives an understanding of the different financial "products" available, and analyzes the pros and cons of each. With that in mind, this book is a great investment to those who want to learn how to become financially independent.
