Book Description

Coaching youth sports series February 1996
A combination of baseball skills and coaching philosophy for beginning youth baseball coaches. This text explains the coach's primary responsibilities, tools required to be an effective coach, communication skills necessary for coaching young athletes, steps to planning and teaching sport skills, methods for preventing and caring for injuries, and how to protect against legal liability. In addition, the text describes how to teach baseball techniques and strategies; explains how to detect and correct common errors made by young baseball players; outlines 27 drills that will develop players' skills and teamwork; illustrates offensive and defensive team tactics, including signalling plays, baserunning strategies, relays and cutoffs, and pitching strategies; and addresses special considerations for T-ball. The book's helpful appendixes furnish a sample season plan for beginning baseball players and resources for working with children with disabilities.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These two slender books provide advice to coaches and parents on how to teach baseball skills to young athletes. Coaching Youth Baseball offers instructional programs and drills for successful development. House, who also wrote The Pitching Edge (LJ 2/1/94), concentrates on a training regimen to maximize performance and avoid injury. Both titles are recommended for large public and high school libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars More On Non-Technical Ideas, July 24, 2003

This review is from: Coaching Youth Baseball (Coaching youth sports series) (Paperback)
This book does cover more of the non-technical aspects of being a youth coach, but it does a good job at covering those. Many of these items are not covered in other books, so it is very helpful. Perhaps not as good as a "... for Dummies" guide might be, which are much better than their titles indicate, but it comes close. Certainly worth checking out.
