4.0 out of 5 stars Your Sweet Love, February 21, 2009

This review is from: Coachman (Audio CD)
Kate Gaffney's CD "The Coachman" offers good midtempo tracks. Vocally, she holds her own with a crack band. "What Kind of Man" rocks after a quiet opening verse, "My dad told me that I was young, You can't go out all night & have your fun, If you choose the same life that I did, you won't lose, but you won't ever win." Jackie Greene helped co-write "Mighty Ship." With Greg Leisz's pedal steel, it comes across like an acoustic country weeper. My favorite track, "Before I Go," builds on a good riff with Kate's vocal swagger, "Won't you lay beside me for another night, Won't you lay your sweet love on me before I go." Jackie Greene wrote "The Ballad of Sleepy John" that was on his CD Gone Wanderin. Kate's version hangs wistfully on strong guitar backing without ever gaining steam. Kate covers Woody Guthrie's "Philadephia Lawyer" with a pensive arrangement, "Way out in Reno, Nevada, where romances bloom & fade, There was a Philadelphia lawyer making love to a Hollywood maid." "Fallen for the Road" burns with a delightful energy and bubbly percussion, "Pray good angel, please look down, sweep me up on stage, I could lay here waiting for a line or hold my breath, waiting for a glass of wine." "The Coachman" is a good CD with flashes of brilliance that make it worth exploring. Enjoy!

This is a gem. I can't wait for the next CD from Kate. If it's anywhere near as good as The Coachman, there will be many many happy fans.
