Good info, but tedious,
By D. J. (Iowa) - See all my reviews

Christopher Schwartz is a very good author. I can read his stuff at length, but frankly, I find it mind numbing to listen to him do an instruction video. I also have "Forgotten Hand Tools" so this isn't a fluke. It took two to three viewings to get through it. Obviously just my opinion but he goes on incessently about every detail and then repeats again. When you add that to his monotone pitch, it gets tough for one sitting. I think I heard the definition of "Course, Medium and Fine" at least 15 times. On the upside - I don't question his expertise on the subject but just feel I would have been much better off to read it.

Practical, Insightful, and Educational,

This review is from: Coarse, Medium and Fine (DVD) (Misc.)
Chris Schwarz brings both great information and passion to the teaching in this DVD - as a relatively new woodworker who doesn't have any good local learning options, I invested in several of the DVD's produced by Lie-Nielsen so I could build my knowledge.Schwarz is a great teacher, and in this DVD he provides a very logical way to think about your use of hand tools to work with wood. Others recommend individual tools for newbies, and explain how to use each, but few provide you with the context to help you understand why things work - or don't. Moving from jack plan to jointer plane to smoothing plane not only works, but the way Schwarz explains it helps you understand WHY it works. Most other instructor and books mention 2 of the 3 planes, but they don't provide the clear vision new woodworkers need to make good choices. Not only did I save time, money and frustration thanks to what I learned in this DVD, I also increased my own passion and enjoyment as a result of watching it. I've put in on my iPad so I can easily reference it in the shop or on the road - great stuff!

Very Informative,

I found this to be a very informative DVD. I much prefer Chris's style of talking directly to the camera. Other woodworking DVDs feature an author having a fake conversation with a helper, which I find hokey and stilted.
