Book Description

August 1, 2008
Explore the marvels of the South Carolina coast through the eyes of two gifted coastal geologists. Miles O. Hayes and Jacqueline Michel take their exceptional understanding of the Carolina coast with its barrier islands, estuaries and bays, and, offer rare insights into this beautiful, and, sometimes, treacherous world.

Illustrations, photographs and satellite imagery enhance a narrative that presents hard science and makes it accessible and very human. This is a book that investigates the changing face of the coastline through erosion, hurricanes and climate change. This is a book that matters.

Editorial Reviews

Review

What a delight. Everything you want to know about the SC coast written by the team that knows it best. Richly illustrated by superb color photography, including many infrared aerials, this book tells it all. No other state has such a comprehensive yet readable description of how their dynamic coastal zone works. A must for anyone who loves the beautiful SC shoreline and surroundings. ---DR. ORRIN H. PILKEY, Professor Emeritus, Duke University, Nicholas School of the Environment

To see is not necessarily to observe. Most residents of the Palmetto State's coastline are relatively familiar with the general features of its geography and the flora and fauna it supports. But unless one's beach house is in danger of sliding into the Deep, do we realize how dynamic a system governs its contours? Miles O. Hayes and Jacqueline Michel do. And the husband-and-wife team of coastal geologists is keen to share the expertise in A Coast for All Seasons: A Naturalist's Guide to the Coast of South Carolina,a comprehensive, general-readership book that gives equal emphasis to science and recreation. ---BILL THOMPSON, Post and Courier

What a wonderful book on coastal geology - written in a style that everyone can understand. It is a perfect mix of photographs, diagrams, and clear explanations. Best book on this subject I have ever seen anywhere! ---RUDY MANKE, Naturalist

About the Author

Dr. Miles O. Hayes is a coastal geomorphologist with more than 50 years of research experience. He has authored more than 250 articles and reports and three books on numerous topics relating to tidal hydraulics, river morphology and processes, beach erosion, barrier island morphology, oil pollution, and petroleum exploration. Hayes teaching experience includes both undergraduate and graduate courses while a Professor at the Universities of Massachusetts and South Carolina. Seventy-two graduate students received their degrees under his supervision, most of whom are now leaders in their respective academic, government and industry positions. He is considered to be the Father of Coastal Geology. A review of his 1999 book, Black Tides, said A skilled raconteur, Hayes tells engrossing stories of responding to most of the recent, headline-grabbing oil spills, including the Gulf War spills, the Exxon Valdez, the Amoco Cadiz spill in France, and the Ixtoc I blowout in Mexico. Interspersed among them are personal events and adventures, such as his survival of a plane crash while mapping a remote part of Alaska. He is Chairman of the Board of Research Planning, Inc. (RPI), a science technology company located in Columbia, S.C.

Dr. Jacqueline Michel is an internationally recognized expert in oil and hazardous materials spill response and assessment with a primary focus in the areas of oil fates and effects, non-floating oils, shoreline cleanup, alternative response technologies, and natural resource damage assessment. As of this time, she has participated in research projects in 33 countries. Much of her expertise is derived from her role, since 1982, as part of the Scientific Support Team to the U.S. Coast Guard provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Under this role, she is on 24-hour call and provides technical support for an average of 50 spill events per year. She leads shoreline assessment teams and assists in selecting cleanup methods to minimize the environmental impacts of the spill. She has written more than 150 manuals, reports and scientific papers on coastal resource impacts, mapping, and protection. As a member of the Ocean Studies Board at the National Academy of Sciences for four years, she served on the four National Research Council committees (chairing two), and is a Lifetime Associate of the National Academies. One of the original founders of RPI, which started in 1977, she now serves at the company President.

This review is from: A Coast for All Seasons: A Naturalist's Guide to the Coast of South Carolina (Paperback)
This book fills a need in a clear and concise way. For too long information on the issues of beach erosion and development have not been presented to the public in a readable form. Discussions about beach re-nourishment, setback lines and development practices have often been based on financial or emotional issues. Here the scientific material which is often only available in hard to find and very technical reports and papers is presented in one place.

If you are interested in a readable unbiased view of these issues this is the book for you.
