5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for all
I am in the Coast Guard myself and when I was in boot camp they even handed out copies of this book to us to learn what we needed to know about the USCG. It covers everything from a brief history to customs and courtesies and to Maritime Law Enforcement. It talks about the different knots we use and how to properly tie the knot. I ordered this book because I was interested in transfering to the Coast Guard and wanted some general information. The book had a lot of information in it about the history of the Coast Guard, uniform and rank structure and such... However, since 9/11 the Coast Guard's mission has changed drastically and they now fall under the Department of Homeland Security. So,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for all, June 15, 2001
I am in the Coast Guard myself and when I was in boot camp they even handed out copies of this book to us to learn what we needed to know about the USCG. It covers everything from a brief history to customs and courtesies and to Maritime Law Enforcement. It talks about the different knots we use and how to properly tie the knot. There's history on the USCG's uniforms and the different ships we use to the different jobs that we offer. It's a great book for all and I even find myself at times referring to it whenever I need to know something! So I recommend it for anyone who is entering the Coast Guard, looking to up their seamanship skills or just want a refresher!

5.0 out of 5 stars The manual for US Coast Guard history and information., August 19, 1999
By A Customer
As a former Coast Guardsman, I can't say enough about this manual, which is issued to every recruit at boot camp. The information within is relied upon by members throughout their career from boot camp, where it is known as the "Blue Book", to paygrade advancements. If you need information on the roles the Coast Guard has played in history, vessel and aircraft specs and missions or even signaling, this is our basic source.

5.0 out of 5 stars The CG Manual is a sailors manual for survival!, June 10, 1999
By A Customer
I am a life long Coastie. My father served in the USCG, my brother serves in the USCG, and I too still serve in the USCG. The CoastGuardsman's manual is a book about survival. The CG manual is a book on sailor life. History, terminology, careers, objectives, duties, and jobs are all contained in this manual. Along with these subjects, this CG manual is a sailors survival guide to being a Coastie. Explanations how to survive the sea, how to rescue and keep alive an injured civilian. This Manual sums up the Coast Guard better than any other book published today. It gives a glimpse into the oldest military force in this nations history. Only the Coast Guard has been around since the days of Washington and Jefferson. The CG has changed in many ways in the past 200 plus years and the CG Manual describes these changes. For anyone who has either been curious about or has had family in the Coast Guard, you shall not find a more complete guide to this branch of service. The Coast Guard has a crede, and it is what every Coastie strives for, what the public needs from the Coast Guard. Whether at war or in times of peace, this nations Coast Guard shall forever be "SEMPER PARATUS" ----Always Ready

So, much of the information about the mission of the Coast Guard is outdated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Excellant, August 22, 2000

I was issued one of these in boot camp back in 79. As a American Legion Commander now, I needed to know how to properly handle a weapon while marching and doing drills. Darn I wish I had of keep it. But I ordered the latest edition and see it is still the great manual it always was and still has the commands and the examples of how to do proper manual of arms.

Excellent manual that covers a good deal of Coast Guard material. Some of the items are a little dated but it is an overall excellent source of information pertaining to the Coast Guard. I am looking at attending Coast Guard Officer Candidate School and found this manual helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another outstanding manual for the mariner in your family, December 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Coast Guardsman's Manual (Paperback)
I bought the military guides (manuals) and decided to get this one about the Coast Guard, which often gets ignored as a military branch (now part of the Department of Homeland Security). This book not only has information on the regulations of the Coast Guard dealing with uniform wear, rank and insignia (etc), but it has a lot of information for anyone who owns a boat. Some of it could save a life, and it will make going out on the water a bit easier.

If someone has a military buff or a person who always goes out on their boat, this book would make a great gift.

Full of many illustrations and charts, this book is a must have for the collection of all things both maritime and military.
