Biography

Red Holloway (James W Holloway), born in Helena, Arkansas on May 31, 1927, is a well-known blues and jazz saxophonist.

He started playing banjo and harmonica, switching to tenor sax when he was twelve years old. He graduated from DuSable High School, where he had played in the school big band with Johnny Griffin and Eugene Wright, and attended the Conservatory of Music, Chicago.

This album was introduced to me by a sax-playing friend, and boy is it good. 'Red's' sax rules the roost, but the interplay between the guitar, keyboards and drums holds the whole thing in a tight, but relaxed groove. Every cut is great - top quality modern jazz for the enthusiast or beginner. Not obtuse, just spot on. Can't wait to see him play live!

I first heard this CD on NPR radio. The beauty of their rendering of Indian Summer is worth the price of the CD. Play this for a young music student and they will have heard the best of the best on the alto and tenor sax.
