Sophomore Album Job Well Done, July 6, 2003
Although entertainment is seldom considered high art and pop culture occupies the lower end of the rung on the hierarchy, Westlife hailing from the pristine Ireland is nevertheless a group of talented vocal artists who steer popular music away from the heavily contamination of sex and violence. Like many other who walked before them, Westlife is undoubtedly a boyband - they don't write their music, they are in a group of 5, they dress as if they just walked out of a catalogue. Although not as comely looking as boyband members would like to be (which is a possible cause for their unpopularity in the US), their vocal talent is real. The songs themselves are nice, clean, and decent love songs. One can get a general feeling of what the songs are about just by glancing at the titles. The lyrics are remenicent of old school serenades that boys sing to the girls they admire in a appropriately passionate way. The melodies, like the lyrics, are nothing profound but are pleasing. Most of them are slow to moderate tempo - not so much of the upbeat-pop-song style - like good old love songs should be. This is their sophomore album. Like their debut album, Coast to Coast is a collection of songs one would enjoy listening to in the car or singing along to while alone. This albuem, however, marks a small leap to maturity. I consider there to be more melodic variations than in the first album. Some of the lyrics can also be interpreted to encompass beyond romantic love but greater affection of other existence as well. Not to mention this album has 4 oldies covers. Against all Odds, Uptown Girl, I have a dream, and My Girl. All are suitably chosen to fit the overall theme of the album. For people who liked their debut album, this is not an album to miss. For those who are not familiar with Westlife, this album is also a good place to start experiencing a more traditional side of popular boyband music.

westlife shows their magic again, May 22, 2002
This is one of the sensational albums i've ever been through. Westlife has surely shown that they are much more talented guys compared to the fast tuning ugly American rock music. They have much more quality in each and every song with great lyrics and melody. 1. MY LOVE - This is a great song with strong lyrics. It provides much of the refreshment even if played again and again. { 9/10 } 2. WHAT MAKES A MAN - A nice little song with strong vocals and some beautiful wordings which provides it a worth to listen. { 7/10 } 3. I LAY MY LOVE ON YOU - Probably one of the brilliant songs of the album. The tune and the melody of the song is excellent. When the video of the song was launched I got the feeling why this band has been so unique from everybody. { 9/10 } 4. AGAINST ALL ODDS - A good song a fine duet and tune. The song becomes much more unique with the voice of Mariah Carey. ( 7/10 } 5. WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING LIKE THAT - A spectacular uptempo song. One of my favourite song of the album. ( 8/10 ) 6. CLOSE - Not one of my favourite though, but the lyrics are smart enough to put this song under the belt of good songs. ( 6/10 ) 7. SOMEBODY NEEDS YOU - This song has a great music and a great quality also lyrics are good enough. This song reminds me of the bsb song-'answer to our life' from their album- black and blue. { 8/10 } 8. ANGELS WINGS - A superb song with the greatest lyrics of any song in the album. Lyrics of the album are quite meaningful which surely shows all the hardwork they have put in the album's quality ( 9/10 } 9. SOLEDAD - This song breaks all the record from NSync's 'This I promise you' to bsb's 'Show me the meaning of being lonely'. It is doubtlessly the best ballad I've ever heard after the above mentioned ballads. This is a unique song with a heart melting music. { 10/10 } 10. PUZZLE OF MY HEART - A good song with a lovely lyrics and a superb music. This medium paced song is quite good. { 7/10 } 11. DREAMS COME TRUE - A sensational uptempo song with some streachy lyrics, a bubblegum pop. { 7/10 } 12. NO PLACE THAT FAR - It is a short little song a very very slow one a OK kinda song { 5/10 } 13. CLOSE YOUR EYES - A very long song but still this song has some quality than the pevious song with a lovable music. { 6/10 } 14. YOU MAKE ME FEEL - It maybe described as the same copyprint of the previous song which has the fine music. { 6/10 } 15. LONELINESS KNOWS ME BY NAME - This song really gives a lot of refreshment after not so good previous nos. It is my second favourite ballad after soledad. { 9/10 } 16. FRAGILE HEART - Pobably the slowest song of the album but the quality of the song is excellent with some meaningful lyrics. The lines- 'dont let your past destroy what it comes tomorrow' can really be a fine lesson for the teenagers. { 9/10 } 17. EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DO - a good ballad and it is really a prominent song { 8/10 } 18. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE - A tune up song and a nice ending to this great album. { 6/10 }

THE USA is definately missing out on this one., April 22, 2002
The USA is definately missing out on something here. In a music stream of talentless pop acts who are famous based solely on looks, Westlife surprisingly stands out. They are the perfect formula for any boyband, pop music with 5 guys who dance and basically don't write a lot of their own music. But in a world full of NSync's and Backstreet Boys's, I actually admit to liking Westlife. They have amazing lyrics and good songs to tag along with. From the emotional "Soledad" one of my personal favorites to the upbeat "When You're Looking Like That" - little, if any of the songs are skippable. This CD has more of a variety than their debut, which supplied mainly with ballads. Now we have the nice ballads that have given Westlife their trademark - "What Makes A Man", "Close", "Every Little Thing You Do", "No Place that Far" but also room for inprovement in uptempo beats - "When You're Looking Like That", "I Lay My Love On You" This CD definately needs recogniztion. If not for the song writing or instrumental talent, then for the vocals. The USA is really missing out on one heck of a good CD.
