5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Ken Hanley, May 26, 2002

I've been fly fishing for trout and smallmouth here in Maryland for years, but my saltwater experience was strictly spinning and bait casting. Due to numerous magazine articles lately on saltwater fly fishing, my interest had been piqued, but old habits die hard. It wasn't until I saw your add in Fly Rod and Reel earlier this year that I finally decided to find out what was going on. This tape is great. I had no idea of the number of options and opportunities that were available to me in the salt water. First of all, Flip Pallot's instructions on catching bonefish seems to apply to just about any kind of fishing, and has changed the way I fish, even for trout. It is perfectly logical, easy to grasp, and it works. Why hasn't anyone done this before? That alone is worth the price of admission. Also the segment on Stripers with Jack Gartside was terrific. During a fishing show here in February, I introduced myself to Jack and thanked him for being such an inspirational teacher. I'm about to go on my fourth trip this season for Rockfish( that's Chesapeakese for striped bass), and I must say I'm hooked. Much more fun than jigging with plastic worms. Now I'm not all that interested in fishing for spotted bay bass, but Mel Kriegers explanation of sinking lines and shooting heads has taken most of the mystery out of that subject, and has made me a believer. So what can I say but thanks Ken. Lots of great information and a great deal more fun than watching "Wrestle Mania". Now if I can just get the tape back from my brother in law.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coastal Fly Fishing with Ken Hanley & Friends, April 23, 2002

Ken Hanley covers quite a bit of territory in this video from the Texas' Padre Islands to Boston Harbor and So California. The dream list of folks you would want to fish with are included in Ken's jaunt around these coastal waters. This video is both entertaining and insightful for the realm of coastal saltwater fly-fishing. Personalities show through in this video, too. I found the Jack Gartside on Boston Harbor segment particularly interesting as well if not for Jack's antics with Ken alone. Flip Pallot gives some insight to a fish's vision with respect to presentation of the fly. Mel Krieger's excitement fishing around an unlikely place shows though, too. Mel slips in a casting lesson demonstration, also. The quality of this video is first rate. I'm proud to have this tape in my video library and look forward to any subsequent releases that may follow. This is a great collaboration for Ken Hanley and he did it right with his initial release. Get the video and you'll see what I mean. Nice work, Ken.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than just friends, May 20, 2002

I did not know who Ken Hanley was before I got into this video (received as a gift) but the 'friends' include Flip Pallot, Mel Kreiger, Nick Curcione and Jack Gartside... All icons of fly fishing and ALL on this ONE video!

The video not only offers a variety of fishing destinations and targeted species but more importantly (for me anyway) some solid advice on tips and techniques from casting to presentation. Plus the 'friends' background bio's were cool.

I've often been disappointed with 'flyfishing' videos but NOT this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inshore At Its Best, May 3, 2002

I've never fly fished in the salt, so I thought I'd give this video a try to see what I might be missing. What a show! Not only entertaining, as Hanley and the other pros banter and hook into great fish, but full of good, basic instruction for different inshore conditions. I even convinced my wife to sit and watch a few clips--she doesn't fly fish--and had her agreeing that we should take vacations to a few of the spots Hanley introduces. She's even letting me go to Baja with a friend next week for a little inshore practice beforehand! Probably the BEST fly fishing video I've ever seen. You won't be wasting your money if you buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coastal Fly Fishing with Ken Hanley and Friends, June 27, 2002

The video, Coastal Fly Fishing with Ken Hanley and Friends, is a cut above your usual fishing video. While you have an impressive array of stars, the significant value of this video is in its educational potential and in its sheer technical and aesthetic artistry. Sure, you have your necessary sequences of fish being caught, but interspersed you will find teaching tales, how-to strategies, and well-presented vignettes that cover everything from understanding how to present your fly to a fish on the flats, to how to use a casting basket.
The film reflects the high quality of the other videos produced by Jeff Pill, who is a former 20-20 senior producer. Pill has already produced Joan Wulff's best-selling fly casting video, "The Dynamics of Fly Casting"; the groundbreaking video "Women and Fly Fishing" with Jennifer Olsson; and the universally acclaimed and entertaining "Successful Fly Fishing Strategies" with the late great Gary LaFontaine and Dick Sharon. This new fly fishing video -- Pill's first venture into saltwater fly fishing -- features segments from the West Coast, East Coast, Florida Coast and Texas Gulf Coast. Easy-going West Coast fly fishing author Ken Hanley makes the entire coast-to-coast journey, joining such fly fishing luminaries as Mel Krieger, Flip Pallot, Lani Waller, Wanda Taylor, Jack Gartside and Nick Curcione on his search for wadeable, productive waters.
Pill and his team have created an artistic, entertaining, and instructive video that will doubtless become a major source of information for fly fishers interested in the unpressured, diverse fishing opportunities available in inshore fisheries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of content you can use, May 27, 2002
This review is from: Coastal Fly Fishing with Ken Hanley & Friends [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Odds are you are closer to the ocean than a traditional fly fishing stream or lake so this tape can show you how to enjoy your sport in a new setting closer to home and with new species. A friend bought this tape for her husband for Fathers Day so she can go to the beach and he can fly fish on the same trip.

At an hour and 45 minutes there is a lot to this tape but it is broken up into 5 segments so it is easy to digest. But with two or three experts in each segment you will definitely get your moneys worth. And the camera work and scenery are much better than most fishing videos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent fly fishing video, August 12, 2002

This is an excellent video on fly-fishing the salt water. There is a lot of good information given on techniques, how to cast and where to cast. Mel Krieger's casting demonstration was real good. Flip Pallot's segment on how fish swim and where to cast in anticipation of where the fish will be was very informative. Ken Hanley's tip about a high roll cast to force sinking line to the surface before a regular cast is really helpful. There are a lot of other great fishing tips in all segments of the video such as how to walk in flats, casting techniques and a lot more. A good tipped mentioned in passing is that when fishing a new area, hire a guide. Everything is presented in a straightforward manor that is easy to follow. The video makes me want to head to the surf as soon as possible. Strongly recommend it to those who want to learn to fly fish the surf and the saltwater environment.
