Editorial Reviews

Dev Hynes is an international man of mystery and the busiest musician on the planet. As if his work as Lightspeed Champion and Test Icicles or co-writing with Theophilus London and Solange Knowles wasn't enough, Hynes has another project: Blood Orange. Blood Orange finds Hynes delving deeper into '80s American musical culture, crossing elements of melancholy synthetic pop with a twangy noir, composing songs exploring the harsh realities of romantic pursuits: longing, uspicion, jealousy, self-doubt and loneliness, to name but a few.

For some reason, no one I know has ever stumbled onto this album. Many people are familiar with his post-punk group Test Icicles and some people know about his folk project Lightspeed Champion, but this Blood Orange project is the one I really hope lasts. It's pretty much a dead-on copy of early Prince, except broken down a bit to just a vocal/guitar croon over a drum machine.

If you like this album, I suggest you also hunt down the songs "Dinner" and "Bad Girls" and add them to this album on your iPod, if you can find them, that is. At least check them out on Youtube...this album is great, but those two songs are still a tad better even.

This album is so much fun, simply a first-rate exemplar of modern beats and unexpected moods. No time to go on at length. Sample this and if you like what you hear you can't go wrong. I actually play CDs on an actual 5-CD turntable (people, I have a superb vintage stereo, and mostly I play through my 1985 Pioneer PD-65 single-disk, through my Crown stack, into my Rectilinear Highboys, so I am not downloading anything here, and neither should you be)--and to me the sound of a great album is when I rush over to the player and go "What the hell is this?" which I did twice here. Excellent stuff, and if what the cool kids are saying is true--that dance music of this variety is now the thing--you're looking at a prime example of why, right here.

This album has such a cool vibe. Its like someone took early Prince mixed it with toro y moi's style, added some cool 60s guitar and gave it a shake and out came this glorious fresh album. I hope this dude keeps making music under blood orange. It works beautifully. This album is definitely in my top 50 albums of all time. Cool vibes. And btw the first dude was right. Download "dinner". Fantastic track!

Versatile to his own styling so being it collaborative r&b style lounge songs on this album that draw you into the story to his other hard core garage band were you are waiting for then to trash everything in progressive screaming chords.

This man knows music and how to mix them and how to build a story and mood were you want to listen from start to end.
The albums nuanced and hope he doesn't get bored with the Blood Orange moniker.

Great CD, several good songs on this album - if it had Bad Girls and Dinner I would be a 5 star CD.
