Book Description

June 1, 1998
From the Maine shoreline to the Florida Keys, and from the Northwest's inland waters to Baja, California, this collection of oils and watercolours includes views of New England's rocky shores and sandy beaches, Chesapeake Bay, South Carolina's Low Country, the rugged Oregon Coast (where Lewis and Clark first sighted the Pacific Ocean), the spirit of sailing across San Francisco Bay, and the expanse of Big Sur.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Colorful and evocative. . . . Painter Ray Ellis and undersea explorer Robert Ballard team up to capture the beauty and diversity of America's Atlantic and Pacific coastlines. To my mind, Ellis's most captivating watercolors are those from Norfolk, Virginia; Key West, Florida, and, of course, the South Carolina Lowcountry. -- The Islander, October 1-7, 1998

For those who have not yet begun their watery explorations, lazily exploring these pages can only make a longing for the sea more intense. Happy cruising. -- Tampa Tribune, 12/6/98

Many of Ellis' most memorable paintings are ordinary scenes we might not notice if the artist had not rendered them so beautifully. "I am thrilled to leave this legacy of the country I love so much," Ellis writes. It is a legacy we can all be grateful for. -- Island Packet, Hilton Head Island, SC, August 9, 1998

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, January 17, 2011
This review is from: Coastal Images of America (Hardcover)
Ray Ellis is credited with being an award winning artist who has exhibited throughout the US and in London, and as having contributed paintings to a number of books.

With over 150 full colour plates of the artist's paintings of the American coast from marshland to major built-up areas, and including many seascapes, this is a beautifully illustrated book. The accompanying text provides a history of the coast, both in geological and social terms with accounts of the early settlers as well as of today's residents.

The vast majority of the images a full page in size, and many of them cross the gutter providing an even larger image. The paintings include watercolours ans oils, and there are the occasional close-up details. The pictures are well captioned with size, date and a brief comment.
