The color is not at all what I would call "cherry," be that natural, dark or warm. I used to do furniture repair and I'd rate this as Colonial Maple, a bit less reddish and more towards the orange than shown in the sample Amazon picture (as of the June 2014).

This is rather well made for cost-cutting, rapid turnout lathework these days. There are metal female thread inserts pressed into the ends of pegs and poles so the male threads bite into metal, not wood. The circular pieces are compressed particle board, the rest seems to be a lightweight wood of little grain or description. Not the best sanding job I've seen but no chips, checks or splits in it.

Did not come with instructions but wasn't hard to figure out. I kept looking for nuts or washers or some sort of thread locking fasteners but eventually figured out there aren't any.

I had to undo some of my work so I'll share an assembly tip. You start with the top circular piece. Thread in 6 banisters (are they called banisters if under a horizontal rail?) Next, position the short central pole. Add the plastic drip pan under it, then place the bottom circle under all of the above. Thread the 6 feet through the bottom circle and into the banisters. Thread the central bun foot into the central pole. Base of unit is now done.

Top 2 extensions and peg hooks ought to be a no-brainer, look at the pictures.

Complaints from 2 years ago and more about threads digging into the wood and loosening don't look to be a problem any longer. All thread joints on my unit are metal-on-metal, so I expect this to last many years.

Be aware that this is not your grandfather's coat and umbrella stand. Fitted peg and mortise joints are not to be found on this.

The problem is that the screw holding the top half to the bottom eats into the wood, causing the hole to become too large, and so it leans or falls. I'm hoping I can fix this, because overall I really like this coat rack. But it will be hard - I have to put something in that hole for the screw to bite into, or take the screw out and somehow join the two pieces. How in the world am I going to do that...

UPDATE: After trying and trying to fix this piece of junk, I'm updating my review to 1 star, down from 2. I just realized there is a piece missing from the middle that they failed to supply. No wonder it's so junky and broke in two. I can't believe they doubled the price since I had bought it. DON'T BUY THIS!

I'm on winter season 2 with the coat rack and it's starting to come apart. Now I'm in Chicago and my coats are heavy and plentiful. The top is coming loose from the base. It leans to one side and the knobs on the top are loosening, one of them is cracking in half. I've found that the umbrella holder is not as useful as I though it would be because most of my umbrellas are short and fold up to fit in bags. I think I will invest a little more in my next coat rack but it was fun to try out this style. Unfortunately, it was not made to last like so many things these days.

My experience was very different than the last reviewer's. I bought mine for the office. There was a graphic diagram and was easily put together. Very sturdy. Surprisingly heavy. Finish isn't that great but that's very minor. No tools needed for assembly. I put the shorter pegs on top and is great for hats. Very pleased and may buy another for home.

This hall tree is well-made, is nicely finished, and is very solid. The instructions were slightly hard to follow, but it went together fairly easily. It's not apparent from the picture, but the top part swivels, which is convenient. I added some plastic feet to the legs so that the wood wouldn't soak up water if the floor got wet.

We needed this coat rack for a business office, and so far with it being summer it hasn't been used as a coat rack yet. It has decent space for maybe 6 umbrellas. It was easy to put together, and seems to be sturdy. So far we like it, and seems to be a good value for the price. Of course the next week after we bought it, the price went down, so beware of that, and keep an eye on the prices changing. My only complaint is that I wish it were a little darker color. It seemed darker in the picture to me, and in person it's more of an orangey oak color. We picked this coat rack specifically because it's multifunctional - holds hats, coats, and umbrellas - and it does just as it said it would.

Our living area has wooden vaulted ceilings and wood floors. When I saw this umbrella stand/coat hanger I saw that quite possibly it could fit in with our decor. I only prayed that it not be some cheap, flimsy looking thing as sometimes you get when shopping online. Photos can be enhanced. This one was as good if not better than the picture. The quality and materials used were of good standard and when assembled was very sturdy. All in all we are very happy with this product.
