I recently picked up this title after reading several favorable reviews. To sum it up I have not been disappointed. There are several themes available (Jungle, etc.) and the gameplay becomes intuitive very quickly.

You start with one park and one theme available and set out to meet certain goals. Some include attracting a certain number of guests, earning a set amount of cash, staying in business for a minimal amount of time, etc. Completing the goals earns gold tickets which can be used to open up other parts of the game. The interface is easy to navigate as descriptions for the buttons are always on the screen. There is also a helpful, although annoying sometimes, tutor that will guide you through handling problems and the various interfaces.

You have to decide which rides to build and their placement. The coaster design system is fairly simple to pick up on. The only problem I had was trying to tweak one ride where it would go from 'boring' to 'sickening' with just one tweak of a pylon for my coaster. But that is also what makes it fun. You can even get awards for really good coasters. You also have to hire staff such as security, researchers, janitors and entertainers.

This isn't an adrenaline fueled game. I really enjoy because I can kick back on my couch and relax while having a great time. One of the highlights is that you can walk around you park, play the games and ride the rides and coasters you have constructed. This one requires a little more in the congnitive department than a fighting or shooting game. But pick it up, it's definitely up there with SSX and Madden.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a cool game!!, November 5, 2000
This review is from: Theme Park Roller Coaster (Video Game)
I have this game on my playstation and its so cool! If you had the first game, Themepark, then you'll notice the difference! It has brilliant 3-D graphics and you can go on the rides yourself, build themeparks in different worlds like in space, or in a spooky place or in a cheerful happy flowery land. You have researchers to research new rides, features or shops, I definatley recommend this game!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Theme Park Blows everyone else away, December 12, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Theme Park Roller Coaster (Video Game)
I played this game from 7 am to 9 pm with breaks in between, but I wasnt bored with it. It has so many different things to do. The graphics have improved greatly over its playstation cousin. The way the game feels is different, and letting you ride the rides is even better, and with improved everything on the ps2, it makes it all the more realistic. If I were any gamer, I would hand over the money quickly, because a rental just isnt enough.

I have never played the themepark game for PS1, but I have played Roller Coaster Tycoon for the PC. I bought that game last year and still play it at least once a week on my laptop. It's addicting. I liked RCT because it was so real life. You can buy property, you can raise land, lower land, build water, and build rides that actually do exist. Yet in Theme Park Roller Coaster for the PS2,..it has none of that. It's too cartoony. Granted, the game has cool graphics, but your building rides that dont exist. This is not a "sim" game in my eyes. I have another gripe, one being that little helper guy that constantly comes to "help" you. He always contradicts himself.. he says "your payroll is too high, you should consider letting go some of your staff", but not even 2 mins later he says "guests are complaining that there isnt enough places to eat, maybe you should build a restaurant" ..umm hellooo? ..doesnt that require staff on a payroll?!. And another gripe, after the payroll too high comment, I get a "message" saying "guests are complaining about the admission price, you should consider lowering it". Well, I had the admission price at only $10. How else do I pay the hired help?. The "helper" contradics himself. And, in RCT, you could add waterfalls, plants, trees, bushes, rocks etc.. but in this game, you need to hire a researcher and then need to wait for the "research" to be complete. Little things like that are annoying. I just thought it would be life like, similar to RCT. But, its extremely cartoonish and out in left field. I wish I would have rented it beforehand, because if I did, I would have noticed the overly cartoony feel and would have continued playing my RCT and building REAL rides, not a ride that is a monkey with swinging arms that have midgets under the age of 16 roaming my park. I hope someone comes out with a lifelike themepark sim like RCT for the PS2, then i'll be a happy guy!. In the meantime tho, i'll stick with Madden 2001, and SSX as im playing RCT on my laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of all rollercoaster videogames, this one may be the best..., December 13, 2003

This themepark creator game is absolutely THE BEST, its got so many cool features...

U can desighn your own roller coaster, and you are rated on it with remarks like faster, please and slow it down!

U can hire and pay your own staff, but you must raise enough money to pay them or else you may end up having to fire them!

U can actually become a guest at your own themepark and play your sideshows, ride your rides and even go on the roller coaster thet you spent so much time constructing!

In conclusion, BUY THIS GAME! it is worth every cent.

I had purchased a PS2 and one of the first games I rented for it was Theme Park Roller Coaster. I was hoping to get a game that took some of the aspects of 'Roller Coaster Tycoon' (Which I have for the PC and really like), but would give you the ability to 'Ride' your rides. Boy! Was I in for a rude awakening!

This game makes you build your 'Park' in special 'Worlds' (Space world, dino world, halloween world) and your available ride and attractions change to fit the 'world'. Now most of these are just stupid rides. Yes, you can build your own Roller Coaster...and Yes, you can ride it, but the coasters you build have too many limits set on them and the 'ride' is not realistic AT ALL (very slow, wrong camera angles, etc).

Basic Story: You are a Manager of a Park and you need to build attractions and make money to earn 'tickets'. Now some tickets are VERY easy to earn, but many of them take so long to earn, you lose patience waiting to get to the next 'world' so you can try more rides.

I was VERY Disappointed in this game. I am a 21-year old Roller Coaster Fan and I thought this would give me something to tide me over until summer when the parks open again. So much for that idea. I have a 11-year old brother who Loves the 'Roller Coaster Tycoon' game, and he played this a couple times and lost interest too. I came this [ ] close to buying it with my PS2, but I'm glad I didn't.

On Top of all this...the graphics don't due justice to what the PS2 can produce. This is NOT 'Roller Coaster Tycoon' but you can ride the rides. No Where near in comparision!

Unless you have tons of patience and not really looking for much in the entertainment dept, I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone. I would have expected better for a 'Sim' Game.

Note: The '6 & up' rating isn't accurate since it would be too complicated for players as young as 6.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment, May 29, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Theme Park Roller Coaster (Video Game)
This game is fun in a sense that you can ride your rides, but I was disappointed by the fun factor. Compared to Rollercoaster Tycoon, it was BORING! After about a day of trying new parks and new coasters, I was bored and I hardly ever play it anymore. When designing a coaster, I could only use so much track, and I couldn't do helixes or corkscrews. The cover of the game portrays it completely different from the actual game, and when I tried to find a coaster on the game that was the same type as the one on the cover, there was not one coaster like it. I did not give it one star because you can ride the rides, and you can see the people's expressions(and roller coaster tycoon can't do that). Overall, roller coaster tycoon still has me interested, and it is much more detailed and has a much larger variety(in terms of more park senarios and more lifelike rides). Whoever is reading this: if you are planning on getting rct and theme park, play theme park first because it won't interest you if you play it after playing rct. If you're planning on getting just one: get rct!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, January 19, 2001

I have had the same experience as one of the other reviewers . . . this game continually locks up on me while I'm trying to play. And, since the load times are unbearably long, it's quickly become my least favorite game to play on the ps2.

2.0 out of 5 stars Falls short of other Amusement Park games..., September 25, 2003

I was a big fan of the original "Theme Park" game, so I grabbed this one as soon as I got a PS2. It's not bad, but definitely falls short of other Amusement Park building sims, such as Rolle Coaster Tycoon and the original Theme Park.

My biggest complaint is the restrictions in themes. Each location has its own theme. You don't get to choose the theme. You can't mix themes. I think it would be a lot more fun if you could just choose from a pool of rides and buildings like in others.

The interface can also be a little awkward at times. About the only really fun part is the 3d walkthrough of the park, and riding the coasters you design. But that feature is available on far better amusement park simulation games.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Theme Park Roller Coaster (Video Game)
This, is a great game. It has awesome rides and shops that you can build and it even lets you test some of them out in a visitors point of view. You can set up ticket prices, hire and fire new staff, and much more. It's like you are really desinging a theme park. The only con is that it's very animated and nothing actually looks reall.
