Editorial Reviews

Beautiful harmonies, irrepressible humor and the songs of Lieber & Stoller-what could possibly have kept the Coasters from becoming huge stars? These 1958 and 1960 LPs show off the Coasters at the top of their game: the hits Searchin'; Young Blood , and One Kiss Led to Another plus their sweet versions of Satin Doll; Moonglow , and more, 26 total!

....but two albums that the Coasters recorded, the former the first album they recorded for Atco after Carl Gardner(lead)and Bobby Nunn(bass)left the Robins to help form the Coasters, the latter an album recorded a few years later that shows them as fine vocalists capable of handling standard material. I am glad that these albums are now available on CD, as I have been trying to get them for some time. I think that anyone who is only familiar with the Coasters singing comedy should listen to "One By One", you might be surprised(unless you flipped over "Yakety-Yak" back in the day), I think they do a fine job with the material. Of course, the comedy material on the first album is first-rate.

They started out as the Robins and recorded for Spark Records. When the group split, two of the members signed with ATCO, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, and formed a new group, the Coasters, so named because they were on the west coast. With the possible exception of the Platters these guys were the most successful doo wop group ever.

What you see here is the CD version of ATCO 101, the very first album the label issued. This is NOT a greatest hits package. Half of the songs are actually by the Robins and the other half are by the Coasters. The Robins tunes are "Wrap It Up", "Riot in Cell Block #9", "Smokey Joe's Cafe", "Loop De Loop Mambo", "Framed", "One Kiss", and "I Must Be Dreamin'". The other seven are by the Coasters and I can't remember ever seeing "Lola" on any other LP or CD, except the Rhino Handmade box set. "Searchin'", "Young Blood", and "Down In Mexico" are also included. This album, worth at least $100 in LP form in NM condition, is absolute dynamite from bedginning to end. Unlike most American pop LPs this one had 14 tracks, quite a deal.

As far as One By One goes, it's a matter of taste whether or not you want to hear the Coasters do the standards. You won't find any of their best known songs here.

If you don't want to pick up the box set, what I would do is get this one, Coast Along With the Coasters which is the later material circa early 60's, and then purchase a nice greatest hits package like The Ultimate Coasters which picks up most of the other hits like "Charlie Brown" and "Poison Ivy".

One caveat: the Coasters with different lineups re-recorded their tunes so I would sample the tunes before buying.
Have fun going back to the good old days of rock and roll.

I bought this after seeing One by one on vinyl in my favorite record store. Although it wasn't that expensive, I feared the lp wasn't one I'd play twice. So, I bought a cheaper twofer that has One by One and the first Coasters Lp on it. One by One is an interesting historical update relative to their golden age but it's not outstanding. No song on it will make any of my compilation discs. The first Coasters lp makes it worth it (actually some Coasters and some Robins but still good stuff).
For the casual Coasters fan I'd recommend the 2 disc 50 Coastin' Classics. That one is a 5 star release. For the completest go for the box set: "There's a Riot Going on".

Every vocal group deserves an album that features the members' individual talents. This one does just that for the great voices that made-up the Coasters. Excellent interpretaions and arrangements.

Nice to have the rare "One Kiss Led to Another", but there's no mention of "Charlie Brown" or "Little Egypt" OR the rarely seen "Wait A Minute" or "Shoppin for Clothes". What we do have here is at least two songs by the Robins, the group headed up by lead singer Carl Gardner before he and another member started the Coasters (for the west coast). They are "Smokey Joe's Cafe", a great tune by Lieber/Stoller and the title of a Broadway show honoring their hits and "Framed", a song also covered by Richie Vallens back in the day. If you are old enough, you'll recognize SOME of the songs as Coasters' songs but others as covers of others' hits.
