The Perfect Indoor Braai,
By Coffee (South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cobb CB042 Pro Portable BBQ Grill and Smoker (Lawn & Patio)
I did not purchase my Cobb Pro from Amazon, but I adore it so much, I thought it deserved a review.
We have also bought some of the extra accessory kits for our Cobb. My husband was dying for one of these and finally received it for Christmas in 2009. Being South African, we of course love braai meat, but it is always tiresome to heat up a big braai for just the two of you. Besides the fact that if the weather is bad, all bets are off. We have found that this is perfect for us, especially since at the time, we lived in an apartment. However, now that we have our own house, we still use it and it cooks the most perfect coffee steaks and lovely lamb chops. I included some customer images to accompany this review. Some things to note however : - If you prefer your steak rare, it is best to cook with the dome off, however, if you prefer your meat well done, the dome does a good job of sealing in the heat. - It says it does not smoke, which it doesn't when cooking, but when it is first lit, it tends to smoke for around 5 minutes or so, so this is best done outside. You do not have to go far, we would just leave ours right outside the front door. - Cooking wors on the Cobb can be done, but it is a messy process and will require much newspaper to avoid splatter everywhere. - If you purchased Cobble Stones for use with your Cobb, when cooling the "Cobble Stone" brick down afterwards, I would recommend using a metal pot to smother it, do not use anything glass or ceramic. - You don't have to use Cobble Stones, you can simply change to regular braai brickettes or charcoal - however this means the braai would need to air for longer at the start. We were able to reuse each Cobble Stone twice though, they could've made a third use, but we didn't push it, as after the first use, they become difficult to light and I would recommend a the use of a firestarter to get it going if you plan on reusing them. - The Cobb itself is fairly easy to clean as it comes apart into different pieces. Once you're are done cooking, simply fill the overflow rim (moat area) with hot kettle water and some washing up liquid, then leave it to soak for a bit. If you cook something with a lot of fat, like Wors, you may find the cleaning process a little more "trying" as there will be a lot more fat that comes out of the meat and settles in the tray. - The top plate does have a non-stick coating. Therefore it also goes without saying that to keep this non-stick, one should never use abrasive sponges during washing or scrape metal cooking utensils against it.

It's an awesome product. I cook carrots in the well while grilling chicken or ribs. So easy to use and requires few briquets.

I was skeptical when my husband insisted that we get this grill after the giant gas grill died. However, we've used it twice and I am very impressed with it. First off let me say I hate those gas grill things.... you might as well cook inside. I love the flavor of meat cooked over charcoal or wood chip smoke, but for just two people, making a big fire etc is so not worth it. This little Cobb cooker is a wonder - just 5 or 6 charcoal briquets in the center and you're done! The cooking surface is the perfect size for 3 normal steaks or 4 small ones - or 6 skewers of meat & veggies etc. The Cobb is very light and easy to move around, plus it doesn't get terribly hot meaning if you need to move it due to sudden rain, you can just do so - while cooking. Nice. We've done steaks, hamburger and some veggies on it and the meat cooks quickly, correctly and with minimum drama. (Always a plus!) I also like the clean up with this grill - super easy and I love that this grill is light enough to take it with you on a beach trip etc. Just pack it up in it's travel bag and go. This has just been a great purchase all the way around!
