This worked great for on the boat and off the boat use.

We had to couples on the trip and each couple had a radio. We never had a issue with them reaching anywhere on the boat.
We did have one issue of them not working when one couple was off the boat shopping in Mexico about 2 miles from the boat, at this point we could hear each other but very fuzzy.. Overall perfect and very good on battery life... Its a must for trip with no cell phone capabilities.

This is the same as the CXT395 Microtalk sold at Wally World and with the same price tag. It's a nice little radio compared to a lot of the junk being sold today. The drop in charger uses a standard micro USB charger which makes that part nice too if you need to replace the power cube or charge in your car. The drop in base is sturdy. The plastic belt clips suffer from the same problem as almost all of these smaller radios do these days. It's a proprietary "clip in the slot" piece of plastic that can't be replaced if it breaks. These radios use 3 standard AA rechargeable batteries which is important because you need to throw away the junk batteries that come in the package. They're worthless compared to normal AA batteries - worthless compared to normal AAA batteries even. They're so light that I suspect they ARE cheap AAA batteries inside an adapter sleeve - but because they ARE AA sized, replacing them with a set of rechargeable NiMh increases the 10 minute battery life up to a day or two. I am VERY pleased with The CXT390/395 and recommend them, especially against other radios limping along on AAA's or proprietary lithium batteries that cost as much as the radio if you can even find them.

One last comment. These radios do have the ability to pick up weather broadcasts but using that stubby little antenna, the reception is pretty bad. They have an alert feature but no S.A.M.E. so be prepared to hear every watch and warning that goes out.

EDIT: I retract my recommendation on the grounds that the range for these radios compared to our older cheap units is absolutely deplorable. We've found that neither radio will open the squelch on the other one from much over a thousand feet in the open. They will not work even half way through the local Walmart while the older radios could easily reach home nearly half a mile away from the center of the same Walmart. These radios have wonderful sound quality but the range is on par with a $10 kid's toy.

I am very proud and happy to say that these arrived in wonderful condition I would buy from this seller in the future!!!! Although the 23 mile radius I expected doesn't work in the city limits, which is what let me down!
But thats ok they work perfectly in a large store or in a big event!
I definately recommend these!!!!

Great range for a cheap price. Just make sure to get a 6-pack of Duracell AA batteries.

I was looking for an affordable yet long range walkie talkie for driving/camping and this fit the bill perfectly. It doesn't have annoying rechargeable custom batteries, so you could carry as many batteries as possible to prevent it from running out of charge.

And, it doesn't run out of charge that frequently either. We used it for about 4 days, and we were communicating pretty frequently. We didn't have the vox on, and switched to the low range whenever possible. But even then after 4 days the battery meter didn't even show a single bar drop.

In case you are driving 2 cars and want to communicate, switch to the GMRS exclusive channels. When on foot, switch back to the FRS channels. You'll save a lot of battery that way too.

I have had cobra radios in the past and love the battery saver on them. These were less money than the standard cobras and motorolas. I found out why. They don't have batteries or charger with them. Not to say you can't buy lithium or a 20 pack of duracell. I was just a little let down when i opened them up and there was no rechargeable batteries. They work great dont get my wrong. i guess i should have read the small print better.

I just bought four of these for my family. They do not operate at all past one block of our home. They are a complete disappointment. They claim that the lowest distance you can reach is 2 miles. Try 12 feet. Horrendous.

These aren't bad liitle radios for the money, but I returned them because of the belt clip design. It's so stiff and inflexible that it's almost impossible to clip or unclip the radio to your belt or pants pocket lip without using 2 hands! That's a deal breaker for me. The Motorola FRS rotating belt clip design is superior in comparison. So, be forewarned that if you typically use the belt clip you'll probably need 2 free hands to clip it or unclip it.

Purchased for VOX feature but still have to hold within inches of mouth. Had wanted to lay on seat beside me and use hands free. Mic not sensitive enough.
