  • Voice Alert - Provides the user with specific band voice annunciation
  • LaserEye - Provides easy recognition of band icons

Customer Reviews

Next test was an oncoming police car who was targeting cars in front of me with Laser.
P. Falcioni
You already have to pull it out every time you drive and listen to its incessant beeping - it probably just easier to drive the speed limit.
James Beswick
It does not matter if I am on the thruway or city streets, the false alerts are constantly going off.

Cobra gets badmouthed often by the radar detector community, and for some good reasons. Their marketing is BS and the 'features' often get in the way of actual detecting unless you know what you're doing.

I used to have a Cobra about 6 years ago, and it kept me ticket free for 2 years until it got stolen. The SPX 5300 is reminiscent of that. Here in Lee's Summit, MO, there is a stretch of highway with some known radar sources that I tested it on. I also drive around the KC metro and surrounding areas for my work, so I got the chance to test it out in some real life scenarios.

CONS:

The extra features.
X band is in most places not necessary, so it takes up valuable scanning time and is the source of many false alarms. Thought X band detection isn't useless, most of us don't need it. For the same reasons, leave Ku off. Ku is used sometimes in Europe and Asia.

POP detection causes many many false alerts. Strangely, POP would consistently alert when near a camera. Here in Lee's Summit MO, the cameras aren't enforced, so I don't know if that is mere coincidence.

Laser detection is useless on every detector, so don't kid yourself. Throw Safety Alerts and the 15 band detection in the same category. This is all marketing BS.

Dim display:
In bright sunlight the display can be difficult to read.

Quiet speaker:
My old Cobra was noticeable when I had the music up. The SPX 5300 is just quiet enough that it's possible to miss an alert in loud conditions.

PROS:

Useful sensitivity:
After disabling the extra 'features,' the K and Ka sensitivity got better and the K false alarms went way down with Ka false alarms basically 0.

Cobra has made an affordable radar detector that has 360 degree detection. It comes with voice alert, audio tones and a display letting you know the signal strength and user settings.

I already own the Cobra XRS 9970G Voice Alert Radar and Laser Detector which is a permanent fixture in one of my other vehicles. First I noticed the unit comes in a rigid plastic clamshell (I posted a picture on the main page). I was disappointed to see this since all other radar detectors I have acquired from Cobra came presented in nice boxes. The radar detector is a bit smaller than the XRS 9970G but not by much - it is shorter but wider. The face reminds me of something from the movie Transformers but it is pretty cool looking.

I guess I am spoiled with the Cobra XRS 9970G because I don't have to do anything except make sure it it on and drive. This unit you have to program it to do specifics functions such as IntelliMute and IntelliMute Pro. IntelliMute is a feature that "senses" the revs of your motor and avoids alerts you don't want to hear if you are stopped or moving slowly. IntelliMute Pro prevents detection by police radar detector detectors (VG-2). In the manual it even states this is for more experienced users. Another thing I notice is that the unit will NOT shut down automatically after you turn your vehicle off. With the XRS 9970G after the radar detector senses the battery voltage is under 12.1V the unit will shut down. You will have to manually turn on and shut the SPX 5500 down unless your vehicle's 12V power supply shuts off when opening your doors.

Now about the radar detection and alerts.

I don't know why people say laser is useless. If you're a quitter, then maybe laser is useless, but until I see the red and blue flashing lights I'm not giving up. I tested this thing. City or Highway it will spot X K or Ka BEFORE you get measured. Police say they don't use Ku or VG IV+, but I don't believe anything the cops say.

[---My Brief Background---]

In my possession for the last 10 years that has oscillated between a seat on my windshield and in a box in storage was a classic Cobra radar detector. Surmising from Moore's law--with trickle down radar technology--that archaic device that I had used was replaced by the SPX 5500. Outside of the robotic, chrome-lined outer shell there is really not much difference between the two.

My sensitivity for law enforcement traffic cops gracefully skirting the line between money making ticket business and 'justifiable' protection has transformed me into a picky, and critical, peruser of radar detectors. More than a decade ago, you were fairly safe with a radar detector with good range because rare were those who used LIDARs (lasers).

At present, from my travels, the majority of traffic cops on the freeway across the country are using LIDAR (or they are sitting on the side of the road not using anything). My guess is the former. Inherently the functionality of radar detectors, then, are inhibited a bit for the technology of detectors cannot surpass that which is hard to detect as readily as a primitive radar signal. The only advantage that a car could possess against a LIDAR is line-of-sight; laser can only travel in a straight line.

Radar Detectors Used:

Passport 9500ix (one of the best) This unit had fantastic range (detected a traffic cop a mile away through interstate, city, and hills. Did not detect laser at all. Functionaly useless for it was non-existant traveling i-40 West from Nevada to California (10% detect record). I say useless even though it is one of the best out because the price at 450$ exceeds much more than it offers.
10-year old Cobra - Detects normal Radar bands at short to moderate ranges.
