Editorial Reviews

From the back cover

Imagine an 18-foot king cobra packing enough venom to kill an adult elephant: even when decapitated its head has been known to bite and kill! -- as a house pet. See how this most regal of snakes lives in relative harmony -- unless you foolishly rile it up -- throughout the Indian Subcontinent and Africa. Watch antivenom being created from regularly milked cobras, snake-bite charmers engaged in a devil dance to save a bite victim and a battle royal pitting a furry marsh mongoose against a furious cobra. Cobra also shows you how the wily reptile forms its menacing hood, is charmed by motion and vibration, not sound, and can accurately shoot crippling venom straight in your eye. Charming, no?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little Too Creepy, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Cobra:King of Snakes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a well-made, realistic video with excellent photography, writing, and narration. It provides a lot of information. But this is a program only for those who can stomach the averse, repugnant, repulsive, graphic scenes like the cobra swallowing a mouse, which is shown four times, cobra in the chicken house, in the rice field, villages, and homes inadvertently getting people scared. As true as all this is, not everyone wants to see distasteful scenes of cobra-bitten people or even the scenes of a group of cobras crawling in a basket.

The show brings out the danger of cobras and danger to cobras in different parts of the world. The cobra charmer, cobra show, venom labs and venom milking are all interesting, but they are also somewhat gross and fear-inducing. The folk tales, cobra dance, sacredness of cobra and reverence for cobras in Sri Lanka are intriguing.

This show is not for the sensitive person who may be shocked or scared. This comment is not to take anything away from all who worked so hard to videotape cobras from many countries. They have put together a wealth of information, but a warning is in order for those who may not want all the reality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cobra: King of Snakes, April 6, 2001

This review is from: Cobra:King of Snakes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The Cobra is by far one of the most mysterious and intriguing snakes. Almost anyone can instantly identify the familiar hood. Even with it's potentially lethal bite this snake is revered by many. Certain cultures live with this incredible creature on a daily basis and interact with it as if it were the typical house pet. Not only is the snake feared and respected, but even worshiped at times. Including excellent photography and a suspenseful music score to go along with it, this is a definite must have for snake lovers out there. By capturing the essence of this creature in people's houses and it's natural habitat, it can be seen that it is infact not a mindless killer but rather a sensitive animal that would sooner be left alone than go in for the kill. With an emphasis on it's ecological niche and the importance of preservation, this video informs and creates an overall understanding of this commonly miscontrued creature. The Cobra truly is the king of snakes.
