No where near the 20 mile range,

I have been using this product for a while, and it is working fine, except for the range is no where near the 20 miles. I would say it works within 1 mile, and that's about it. Otherwise, it is a good product with no other problems.

They worked great. We didn't go to far from each other, so I don't really know the true range, but just for setting them up around the campus of a church for a walk through production and to allow the behind the scenes people to talk to each other - it was great.

We purchased these to use on a cruise we were taking. When they first arrived there were several things I was grateful for. They fit very nicely in your hand and are easy for kids and adults to use. The charging plug uses one outlet but charges both devices at the same time (which is huge on a cruise ship with limited outlets). Trying them out around town and they worked great. I sure wasn't going 20 miles but had no trouble going a couple of miles in the suburbs. On the cruise ship I was surprised at just how well they worked. We were unable to go from the top deck to the very bottom deck but could get pretty close. It made the whole trip much easier with less planning. They provide lots of functions with a wide variety of channels and we never had an issue. The lock feature was nice so the kids didn't accidentally change channels but you do need to remember to unlock it before you are able to turn it off. Overall, a great value for the cost, if your looking for long distances you will need to spend more.

I bought these radios for two purposes. One, I am one of the few remaining individuals in the modern world who does not own a cell phone. For ten years, I had one almost surgically attached to my body and when I moved to Japan, I wanted to distance myself from the constantly-on-call lifestyle. So these will make it possible for me to communicate with a partner on the occasion that I am in a crowd (common in Tokyo) shopping or when I am in the countryside or on a mountainside with a companion or two taking photos. I also do a significant amount of international travel, sometimes to places where a cell phone is impractical or even hardlines are unavailable. These will fill a niche of need I've felt for quite some time. The second reason is for emergency purposes. As most reading this review well-know, Japan has had and continues to have its share of earthquakes. After the big one on 3/11, many cellphones did not work or did not work well for some time afterward. It dawned on me that if the kind of quake that occurred in Fukushima happened in Tokyo, there would probably be no service at all for a very long time. On top of that, my father shared what he was reading from the book "One Second After", a fictional scenario of what would happen following an EMP attack. Being that relationships with North Korea and China are tenuous, at best, and being that I live in Japan, and being that the technology for such an attack is already in the hands of the Chinese, and being that even only a minimally effective version of an EMP attack could be easily cover well more than the Tokyo metro area, my paranoia kicked in and gave me added incentive to purchase these radio's. Out of the box, they worked perfectly. The instructions are not extremely detailed and they don't have to be, the radio's are, for the most part, easy to figure out although there are a few functions that are better explained by the manuals. The size of the radio fits neatly in the palm of my medium-sized hand (I am 5'11) and they are very light weight, even with the included rechargeable batteries. As of yet, I have not field tested them (other than within the confines of my apartment complex) so I cannot speak for their very practical outdoor use but perhaps I will later append this review to include those impressions as well. But based on what I've seen/experienced with them so far, I'd give them an all-star rating and would recommend them to others as well.

These work great for what they are needed for! I am not sure how far in range they actually go, but they go far enough for what I needed them for! They are excellent for big outings like camping and things like that.
Thanks Cobra for the excellent product!

We were looking forward to getting this product. We ordered the same brand of radio from Amazon a few years back and it was really handy during our out-of-town travels. We were so disappointed to find out this one doesn't work. The power turns on, the display works fine but it just won't communicate. We've reviewed the manual, checked for fineprints, checked the internet for support to no avail. This is the first time I would have to return a product I'm just not sure yet.. exactly how I'd do it in amazon.

The size and feel of the radios were very nice. The color and look also were nice. But, the problem is that the radio directions were not that helpful. It seemed that to keep the price low, every bit of paperwork was minimized.
Since one of the two were broken, I had to send them back. As a result it didn't give a sense of freedom or that of being Libertarian. I would recommend another brand that has less options and or less intrusion to that radio freedom. |
