4.0 out of 5 stars OK, so you can't talk to outer space!
I own a set of these FRS radios and they get a workout! We use them in museums (like the Louvre!), big grocery and department stores and car caravans...since these radios use the UHF frequencies, "line-of-sight" is important for maximum range...I have obtained almost 2.5 miles or so, but one person was on top of a hill and the other down in a small city...otherwise,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for playing around with but not serious 2 way's
These cobras are a graet deal for the money but don't expect to use them for more than a mile in a city. The interference is bad after a mile. I thought that since eveything on them was digital they would be cool except the volume at the lowest setting is still loud enough to hear by someone one else. Finally don't plan on going anywhere where a lot of people will be...

4.0 out of 5 stars OK, so you can't talk to outer space!, May 20, 2001
This review is from: Cobra MicroTalk FRS1102 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Midnight Frost) (Electronics)
I own a set of these FRS radios and they get a workout! We use them in museums (like the Louvre!), big grocery and department stores and car caravans...since these radios use the UHF frequencies, "line-of-sight" is important for maximum range...I have obtained almost 2.5 miles or so, but one person was on top of a hill and the other down in a small city...otherwise, expect about a mile and change between 2 cars (put the radio outside the window for maximum range - unless it's raining!) and anywhere between 3/4 mile to 1.5 in town, depending on how surrounded you are by buildings. For most people these radios can be very useful...we like 'em in malls, etc so we can go to shops each of us likes and then just buzz the other when we are ready to do something else. I bought the rechargable NiMH batteries...a real long term savings and good for the environment too...I get decent time usage with the NiMH The extra "fluff" items one can buy like AM FM or weather...well, geez, why oh why pay for something you already have? Just get a model with the 14 channels and be happy. These radios are a godsend when 2 people are traveling to strange cities, looking for parking spaces or directions, etc and allow one person to leave the car or luggage safely and carry on some business. The Cobras are a great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cobra 2 way radio ROCKS!, August 8, 2001

Donna Massaro (Woodbridge, Connecticut United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cobra MicroTalk FRS1102 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Midnight Frost) (Electronics)
When I received these 2-way radio's I was very very pleased. First of all, I think that it is convenient that it comes with a belt holder so you don’t have to hold it all the time. Secondly, the 2-way radio has 14 clear channels, a green light that lights up the screen so you can see at night, and it has an incoming call feature.

The range I am very pleased with. I tested it with my brother and we got about 1 1/2 miles until the radio got a little static but I could still here him clearly. But it got static because he was deep in the woods, with all trees around. On clear land without any huge buildings around or any trees the 2 way radio can reach up to 2 miles.

They're very reliable for everyday use. Plus the batteries last a really long time.

These work very well in amusement parks, malls, sport complexes, between cars, etc.

They also include a speaker and headphone outlets on the top of the 2-way radio.

Overall I am very pleased with these radios.

5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars a good low-frills com-set, April 27, 2001
This review is from: Cobra MicroTalk FRS1102 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Midnight Frost) (Electronics)
We first read about these radios in the Circuits section of the NY Times. The article pointed out that all com-sets of this type have, by law, the same power and, therefore, the same range. Additional frills {features} add nothing to the range or clarity, only to the price (features). We went the stripped down route and are quite happy with them after a 2-car ,2 family trip through the Islands of PR on which we were able to keep track of and summon our young ones from the pool to lunch, keep in touch with hiking members of our group, and have very silly talks from our respective jeeps as we drove home from dinner. The range is less than the optimum 2 miles, but was, within the limitations of line-of-sight and interference, enough to be more than a toy and less than a C-Phone. We've also found it great at malls or large Super Markets, or even at the Casinos at Atlantic City. The pit bosses don't like them, though, as they could possibly be used to C-H-E-A-T.

Finally don't plan on going anywhere where a lot of people will be using them cause there are no privacy codes and believe me I know now it is worth it to get them with the privacy codes. So overall they are great for the money with the rebate but if I were you i would splurge and go for the privacy codes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, July 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cobra MicroTalk FRS1102 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Midnight Frost) (Electronics)
I'm quite disappointed in the performance. We got these radios, opened them up, put in the batteries, and the first one worked perfectly, but.... the second of the two "static-free" had nothing but static until you keyed the talk button. We couldn't even leave it on because even on the #1 setting of volume, it was very loud and annoying! I certainly hope I can get this problem resolved with the company or I'm definately going to want my money back!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad AT All, July 19, 2001
By
This review is from: Cobra MicroTalk FRS1102 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Midnight Frost) (Electronics)
I just got this 2 way radio yesterday. It was perfect after my brother went a couple blcks down and we were both outside. But, for some reason, when I am not standing next to a window, I can't hear a thing from anybody. Then fun part is that you can over hear other people's conversations and talk to them. It says 2 mile range but it is REALLY cut down because of New York's big buildings and trees, I haven't tried it out in cars, but I think it will work really well.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love this two way radio!, March 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Cobra MicroTalk FRS1102 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Midnight Frost) (Electronics)
The thing I love best is the range. At a two mile range I can go boating on my sailbaot and stay in contact with my motor going dad.

I love to go adventure riding on my friend's quad since there is so much space where I live and my parents often worry about me and now I can say that I'll be back late.

My dad and I also love to hike and go off trail and again I can give a radio to my mom and stay in touch.

The one main reason why I origonally bought this item is because my mom and sister hate looking at electronics with my dad and I. So of course they go to a department store and they can be in almost any outlet and it takes hours to find them in the two story store.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY IT, September 24, 2001

BECAUSE OF AN ILL FAMILY MEMBER, I MUST LEAVE THE 2-WAY RADIO ON ALL NIGHT. THE STATIC WAKES ME UP. ALSO, BATTERIES HAVE TO BE REPLACED TOO OFTEN. THE ON-OFF BUTTON IS DIFFICULT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS TO USE.
