The Cobra PR170-2VP MicroTalk GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radios make it easy to stay in touch with someone, wherever you may go. This rugged pair of radios is an outdoorsman's best friend, with plenty of range, features, and power to make sure that you don't get separated from the rest of your party in any terrain.

The PR170-2VP MicroTalk radios use the UHF/FM band for ultra-clear, long-distance reception with an extended range capability that reaches up to eight miles, depending upon the terrain. These units feature an easy-to-view LCD display that provides the radio's status at a glance, an easily recognizable call alert that notifies you of an incoming call, and a confirmation roger-beep tone that indicates the completion of the other user's transmission so you know when it is ok to talk. These radios also feature an auto squelch that shuts off weak transmissions or unwanted noise due to terrain or range constraints, as well as a keystroke tone signal that confirms key activation.

The Cobra PR170-2VP radios provide seven GMRS/FRS, seven FRS and eight GMRS channels for a total of 22 channels, all of which are easily accessed via the front panel's push buttons. When combined with the units' 38 privacy codes, users have a choice of up to 836 sub-channels to ensure privacy. These radios are built with a unique circuit that automatically switches to battery-saver mode if there are no transmissions within 10 seconds, thereby extending the battery life, and come with a belt clip to secure your MicroTalk while you are on the go.

The PR170-2VPs run on three AAA rechargeable batteries (included) each, and come with an AC wall charger with a handy Y plug that allows you to recharge the batteries in both radios at once. Each radio has a built-in speaker/microphone/charger jack that lets you not only recharge batteries while in the unit, but use earphone speaker/microphone combinations for hands-free operation. The Cobra PR170-2VP MicroTalk Radios weigh only 2.22 ounces (without batteries), measure 2 x 5.02 x 1.54 inches (W x H x D), and are backed by a manufacturer's one-year warranty.

Okay, first question, why so few reviews? You go on to Amazon.com for the most obscure products, like "Ladies Nylon Ant removers," (remove those pesky ants from your Nylons before you dress in the morning ladies) and you'll see 72 reviews from mostly satisfied customers.

This product for some reason only had one other review. Not sure why. I ordered based on that one review. Mistake.

I got my Cobra PR170-2VP Micro Talk GMRS/FRS 2-Way Radios from Amazon in excellent time, very quickly, I thought. I followed the directions to charge up the batteries, and use the product. But for some reason, the sound kept cutting out. I also had problems with functioning radios. I would get about 5 minutes use out of a radio, before the "battery" seemed to stop working. I wasn't sure.

I tried completely new batteries in both radios, and only one consistently worked. Also, the battery indicator never showed "full" so I wasn't even sure if that meant "full battery" or not completely charged, or whatever? Since only one radio was working, it was difficult to tell if it even worked. And how soon before it mysteriously stopped working.

Very poor quality, and I am returning them today. Not recommended. Perhaps I got a bum pair, but like my fellow reviewer from June, I will be also going on vacation soon (to Disneyland) but right now, in June, and I've no time to wait for a refund, or return. I've purchased another pair of Cobra's from Circuit City, which is a step or two up from this model. And they work perfectly!!! And Circuit City even matched this price, as they'e pricing card was incorrectly displayed and they had to lower the price from $50.00. My lucky day.

Range as previously stated is not near 8 miles - fuzzy at 1/2 mile but works ok for 3 to 4 miles - but for the price not bad. Work great on small trips and short distance - battery life so far is pretty good over 8 hours on one charge.

I bought these for my kids instead of one of the flimsy toy walkie-talkies. They absolutely love them. They may not have the range of some of the higher priced models, but who cares? They work MUCH better than the toys, the price is right ($29.04), they're compact and well-designed, and they look and feel like the real deal (a big plus for the 6-8 year old set). If you're looking to buy your kids some walkie-talkies, you can't go wrong with these.
