Withstands toddler abuse,
By Avid Reader (NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coby CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM Stereo Tuner, Silver (Electronics)
We have this CD player in our kitchen so that my toddler and I can enjoy his favorite tunes while I'm making dinner or whatnot. He climbs onto the counter and gives this stereo such abuse, and touches all the parts you're never supposed to touch on a CD player, and yet it still works perfectly! I'm really impressed by this machine. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that is does make a quiet electronic "hum" when it's plugged in. It doesn't interfere with the quality of the music at all. But if you're in the room and all else is quiet, you'll notice it. For this reason, we keep it unplugged when we're not playing a CD. Otherwise this CD player is great!

This stopped working after about a week.,
This review is from: Coby CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM Stereo Tuner, Red (Electronics)
When I was christmas shopping, I thought this looked really cute, and I figured, "Hey, it's cheap, and looks good." So I bought it. It worked pretty well for the first couple of days, and then the CD playing system on it just decided to stop working. I checked all things that I might have possibly done wrong, but I didn't find any. When you try to load the CD, it doesn't let you play anything. I would not recomend this product for whoever wants to buy it, because it did not work like I wanted it to, and it made a pretty lousy Christmas present after I found out it had broken. DON'T BUY THIS.

Worked for 4 days,

My experience with this boombox was horrible. I bought it, it worked fine for the first 4 days, then the cd player got messed up. It wouldn't load my cds, instead, the cds would spin out of control in the player. This boombox is not recommended.

Not worth the money,

I should have paid more attention to the reviewers who said it WOULDN'T play computer-burned CDs, no matter what Coby claimed. I never got it to play one, even tried CDs burned on different computers. The CDs played just fine in my car, but never on this player. And even worse, after a total of no more than 30 hours using this player, most of that using the flash drive function, it no longer recognizes "store-bought" CDs. A complete waste of money!

it hums!,

Alas, it makes a very noticeable hum even when it's OFF! I have to unplug it if I want the noise to stop. Very disappointing.
But if size matters to you, it's worth mentioning that it's surprisingly small, especially in comparison to other portable stereos. It is easy to carry and fits anywhere. (edit dec08.2006: and now it's incredibly fickle, frequently interrupting a cd with "ERR" or not even playing it at all. i want to replace it, but where are all the red cd players?)

Got it in December; CD player stopped working in April and now the radio reception is so bad I'm tossing it. Can't provide paperwork for refund as it was a gift.

I want to thank Martin for his review which avoided me having to figure out the play method of the unit on USB drives. The unit works well, has good volume and sound (at least by my ear). Since the tuning and voulume knobs are in the rear, you have to feel for them, but they work well and it isn't picky about geting a good signal. I was a little surprised at how small the unit is.
The USB port works well, but the display only tells you which track and how long you are into that track. At $30, I didn't have a right to expect too much, but was pleasantly surprised. Edit as of May 2009: This unit is in my wood shop so I admit the problem I'm now having may be related. The volume is not working properly. You choose a volume and later I can hear it go up slightly, then you can't turn it down regardless of moving the volume knob all the way down. I don't sand much (prefering other methods) so that isn't it and I've tried blowing out the knob with slight air pressure - that too was to no avil. After a few hours, it will go silent meaning the volume knob is working again. Don't know if this is a problem with this player, or if it's just mine, but felt I should mention it.

This portable Coby CD/mp3/radio would be perfect for my toddler's room if it worked. It looks nice and the features were what I wanted, but the CD/mp3 player crapped out after only a couple weeks of moderate use. First it stopped recognizing homemade audio CD-Rs. All my other CD players have no problem. Then it stopped recognizing store-bought CDs, so I could only use mp3 disks. Now it has officially stopped recognizing those as well. I've tried and it just doesn't recognize any disk at all now. And I just got the thing 2 weeks ago. What a POS.

I should have read the reviews closer myself before buying this....mine just inexplicably quit working after only having it a few months. Dont buy this piece of junk...there is a reason it is priced cheap.

Let's see - no manual, no warranty card, no electric cord, nowhere to order one from Amazon. Like buying lots of batteries.
