This review is from: Coby CX-TV1 5" Black-and-White TV with AM/FM Tuner (Electronics)
I bought this to use during hurricane season and it more than paid for itself. I was able to get tv stations while the power was down and more up to date, detailed weather and damage reports than the radio gives. It's also been wonderful for car trips, camping, etc, when I wanted to "get away from it all" but still be informed as to what was going on in the world. Highly recommend as an emergency backup as well as a fun item.

Good Enough For The Tent In My Opinion,
This review is from: Coby CX-TV1 5" Black-and-White TV with AM/FM Tuner (Electronics)
When it gets a little too dark to do anything outside at the campground, and the nearest town closes at sunset, I enjoy reading a good book or watching a little television before calling it a night in my tent. I flip on my little Coleman tent fan, bed down in my sleeping bag, and turn this little television made by Coby on. Sure, it isn't the most fascinating creation on the block, but it will catch most local channels within range of a campsite pretty good. Just look at the price. Do you expect it to catch everything?
It's the perfect addition to any tent campers' arsenal because it provides a TV and AM/FM radio that allows you to keep up with weather and watch a sitcom without having to tote around some huge contraption. It's very lightweight, the picture quality is good, and the radio works very well. Keeping with the cheapskate motif, I broke down and bought a cheap set of rabbit ears that I carry along with me. They help out the TV reception in leaps and bounds, and I recommend that anyone who plans to use this portable boobtube with any regularity should invest in a set. Overall, a good, budget-worthy purchase.

If I could give this piece of junk NO stars, I would.
Coby has never been a favorite of ours [all of their products seem to be "disposable"], but the price enticed us to buy two of their 5" TV's to take along camping. I should have known. After an hour, the first TV [along with the radio] died. We switched over to the second one, and got a whole TWO hours before rigor mortis set in. Yes, we checked to see if it was the batteries, but it wasn't. Neither one worked on AC or DC. As Johnny Cochran might have said, "save a buck and you're out of luck". Do yourself a favor, and pay a few $ more for a better brand.

After 20 years of my 24 inch Magnavox - finally died. I wasn't sure what I wanted to buy so in the meantime I decided to just go ahead and buy this little TV until I decide what i want. I've had it for two months, I watch it about three hours per day 5 days a week and it works great. The only problem I have is with a local channel 5 - wavy lines. It serves it's purpose for the price. Good value.

Buyer Beware,
This review is from: Coby CX-TV1 5" Black-and-White TV with AM/FM Tuner (Electronics)
The TV played out after one (1) month of use. Not daily use either. Pure junk. Don't buy it unless you have money you just want to throw away.

I purchased this TV on February 28. It worked fine for about one week and then the picture tube began dying. As of the last week it will only work for about 20 seconds and then go black. This also apparently affecte the audio portion of the circuit which will be unintelligible from static. On the whole even considering the price this is not a purchase I would recommend. On the other hand if the thing worked as it did for the first week it would be a good item for the price.

Coby CZ-TV1 vs CX-TV6,

TV6 has a built in charger for use with Ni-Cad rechargeable batteries. The TV1 has better egonomics for the tuning and volume control. Both tvs are cable ready to channel 83 and come with an adapter. Both of the tv's I got use 8 D batteries, but instructions indicate some may use C instead. Both tv's pick up a good signal with the built in antenna in Daytona Beach for stations from Orlando (about 70 miles, flat terrain)Both tv's pick up a better signal than a color model I tried- it worked ok on the wall plug, but not on batteries. Both the tv1 and tv6 work well on batteries.

I bought this item refurbished for 12 bucks. I hooked it up fo a coby travel-sized dvd player. I bought this for my home gym & I'm happy that it has no issues playing my cds or dvds... however there was a rather large issue recieving on-air television signals. the picture was clearer then I expected but, even at full power, the sound could not be raised beyond a (barely audible) whisper. this set would be worthless had I planned on using it to recieve tv.
I forgot to test the radio. I'm happy with my purchase, but I would NOT recomend it. update: the radio works very well. the speakers aren't so great but I used the headphone jack to plug in a set of computer speakers. the stations come in nicely but some stations are impossible to find, probably due to the unit's small size.

This is a nice, cheap TV. I have it in my kitchen and it works fine (I use it to listen to and watch the news while cooking). The reception isn't great, but it's OK. It isn't the greatest TC in the world, but it's so inexpensive I think I got my money's worth.

I received my tv less than a week ago. I like to listen to my soaps at work.
Today, out of the blue the TV stops working. I turn on the radio, and the radio works fine. I played with a bunch of buttons, nothing will work. My friend plugged it in under her desk to see if that would work, the tv still doesn't work. So I emailed Coby about it, and here's the response I got: To obtain warranty replacement, return the product freight prepaid to the address below within the duration of the warranty. Please enclose the product, copy of receipt, detailed description of the problem and a money order in the amount of $6.00 for each item. The money order should be made out to COBY ELECTRONICS and covers the cost of return shipping and handling. Failure to enclose required information will result in delay of your shipment. Please allow 4-6 weeks for product replacement. ______________ Kate B. Carter Customer Service Manager Coby Electronics 56-65 Rust St., Maspeth NY 11378 Tel 718-416-3300 x121 Fax 718-416-3305 So, they make a substandard product, I paid $18.99 for it (it's now only $14.99, no wonder!), and I have to pay to ship the tv to them, and give them a money order for $6.00 for them to ship it back. AND I have to be without a tv for 4 or more weeks. Can you say frustrated? |
