4.0 out of 5 stars simple way to display your favorite memories
I looked for a while for a reasonably priced digital frame that had enough internal memory to store my favorite pictures of my child growing up. The Colby has 1GB of internal memory which is more that sufficient for me. Found the product at Kmart for about $20 less than Amazon! Nice display, works nicely and will even play music or video. My only real complaint is that the manual needs work, it really doesn't explain how to move pictures from your PC to the frame...turns out it is really easy if you just use file manager in Windows and find the folder internal to the frame (which in this case is DP850). It also accepts just about any card (if you provide an adpater) so it is easy to copy from your SD or MMC cards as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great frame.. great cost!, November 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coby DP850-1G 8-Inch Digital Photo Frame with MP3 Player (Black) (Electronics)
I just recently purchased this frame for my husband. I received it on his Birthday so it didn't give me much time to figure out how to use it before I gave it to him. I placed all of the pictures I wanted on the frame in a folder on my computer's desktop for easy access. I tried several times to transfer the pictures to the frame and failed. I used a flash drive and I also used the included cord and hooked it to my computer. None of it worked.

I later realized that I had to hook up whichever media I wished to use BEFORE turning on the frame. Once I figured that out it was a breeze to use. I agree with the other poster that the manual that comes along with the frame includes lots of information but is a little hard to follow and doesn't give a great step by step instructional on how to get your pictures onto the frame. It takes a little trial and error.

I give it 4 stars mainly for the difficulty in set up, but everything else is great. The picture quality is amazing and I love all of the options you have with this frame. It seems to be a really great frame and the cost is perfect. The size is nice and it is a very attractive frame too.

I had never heard of Coby before, but I will now recommend this frame to anyone!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice hardware horrible software, January 22, 2010
This review is from: Coby DP850-1G 8-Inch Digital Photo Frame with MP3 Player (Black) (Electronics)
I would like to start by thanking the other reviewers of this device because that's the ONLY reason I was able to use it.

This was given to me as a gift from my employer so I did not purchase it from Amazon.

The book that comes with the device is useless.
The employees at Coby's tech support are also useless.
When I called Coby's support and advised them I wasn't able to add my photos to the device with the (useless) Vividshare program that launched, they advised me the device was defective because "PhotoShare" should have launched.

The support is so bad that even at Coby's support website, if you do a search for "DP850-1G" there are no results found.

The only way to put photos on here would be to treat it as an external hard drive.

When the device is plugged in, you'll see a total of 4 new drives or "Devices with Removable Storage".
The first will be "VividShare" and have a drive letter assigned to it.
The next will just be "Removable Disk" with a drive letter assigned to it. This is the one you need to go into.
From the root of that drive you'll see a folder called "DP850". From there you can go into the "DP850 slideshow" folder and get rid of all the stupid model photos and get rid of the lame music in the "sample music" folder.
Now you can start taking advantage of the 1gig of space they've left you for your photos.

Having said all that.....the DEVICE itself is really nice. It has many capabilities and is not limited to ONLY being a picture frame. If you convert a DVD to MPEG4 and put that on one of the supported card formats or on a USB drive you can even watch a full movie from this with sound.

Coby really should consider upgrading from the irresponsible software developers and support staff to even mediocre developers and support staff and they would have a much better product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, nice resolution, non-intuitive interface, December 31, 2009
This review is from: Coby DP850-1G 8-Inch Digital Photo Frame with MP3 Player (Black) (Electronics)
I rate this frame a 4 instead of a 5 because of the inadequate manual and highly non-intuitive interface. One would think that it would be very easy to transfer photos from the computer to the frame. Turns out, the manual does not tell you how to do this and it is not obvious how to go about doing this on the frame itself. Fortunately, another reviewer has mentioned how to do this easily. Basically, treat the frame like any digital storage device, use Windows' file management system to transfer files and, you should be okay.

It is not obvious what the difference is between photo and slideshow, and how to go about switching back and forth between the two. Again, I fault the writers of the manual who obviously did not use the product when writing the instructions. Also, the slideshow is limited to sixty pictures or fewer; the manual neglects to tell you this too. Also, using the remote, it is not obvious how to switch from the frame's memory to other storage devices. Again, the manual's fault. The frame is also a few seconds slow sometimes in responding to the remote.

This frame is a great value for your money and it can play music and video files too. I really love the calendar, clock, and photo feature. The photos are crystal clear at 800 x 600 resolution. Overall, a good frame severely hampered by a non-intuitive interface and a poorly written user's manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy, November 28, 2011
This review is from: Coby DP850-1G 8-Inch Digital Photo Frame with MP3 Player (Black) (Electronics)
I bought this frame from a local retailer. I was looking for a digital photo frame with a good screen size and good resolution, and this one fit my needs very well.

- Nice 8" screen plus contemporary design: It really looks great sitting on my display shelf, comparing to most frames with straight rectangular edges.

- Great picture display: Pictures displayed on this 800 x 600 resolution frame looked crisp with vivid colors, which was actually a pleasant surprise for me. Just a note: 800 x 600 resolution was a must-have feature I was looking for. Resolution lower than that would simply make people look away from it.

- Operations: When I got the frame home, I didn't look at the manual, for a purpose. I wanted to see if I was able to figure it out myself. It was true that the maneuver of its Menu wasn't the easiest - for some reason the buttons/keys were just not that responsive. I found the included remote control worked better than the buttons on the frame. But once I got it worked out, I plugged in a USB flash drive, and got it display pictures well; I inserted a 4 GB SD HC memory card, got it display pictures well.

- Other features: 1 GB internal memory is a big bonus, which alone can hold a lot photos. The music and movie/video playing, calendar and clock are nice, but they are not what my needs for. As mentioned at the beginning, I needed a digital frame with good screen size to show quality pictures.

Overall, I highly recommend this digital frame, considering the high quality:cost ratio. I gave it a 4-star rating because of its not-so-easy Menu feature and Coby hasn't taken any actions to improve it.

I haven't tried connecting it to PC yet, and I'll give an update once I've done it. Since I have this frame only for a few days and this frame is the very first Coby product I ever have, I can't say for sure it will run for a long time without any issues. I will try to come back with an update after a few months.

Update: I tried the connection to PC and it worked just fine, but the transfer speed from PC to the digital frame's internal memory was slow.

2.0 out of 5 stars quality review, January 6, 2011
This review is from: Coby DP850-1G 8-Inch Digital Photo Frame with MP3 Player (Black) (Electronics)
When I initially purchased this item i didn't really know what I was looking for yet so I looked online for something that was reasonably priced with reasonable reviews. All I knew to look for was a frame with good size, picture quality and something that automatically resizes the pictures. This frame says it auto resizes the pictures however I found that to be not entirely true. All my pictures my camera takes are too big for the frame to resize so it does not resize them....I also tried with smaller pictures and it does not resize them either. It does not have any battery or a way to ad a battery so in the future I will look for something with a battery. It advertises that it is portable and able to be mounted to a wall but that is not very easy to do when you have to plug in an adapter every time you want to use it (in other words its not really portable if you ask me!) The other comments are correct about the poor manual also that comes with this frame. its not just as easy as plug and play, drag and drop. If you have a plugin accessible and don't care about the cord than this frame is OK, otherwise I would not recommended this frame.

surprisingly the item reached me very fast in spite of there being no message to me from the seller.i am really happy.earlier i bought 7 inch insignia frame for [...] $from best buy.the price i felt was very high and not many features so i returned it back only to fall prey for a cheap df808c1 from [...] with similar features of dp850.but the lcd has few dead pixels.the working of the remote is quizzy.why hp should spoil its name for promoting the products of lite on?even though coby is less familiar when compared to HP it brought a competetive product to the market.

1.0 out of 5 stars AUTOnline Fails Again!, December 15, 2009
By
This review is from: Coby DP850-1G 8-Inch Digital Photo Frame with MP3 Player (Black) (Electronics)
Although I had read the reviewers comments about sending two orders to AUTOnline only to have them suddenly canceled, I decided to tempt fate and see if this wasn't just a fluke. I guess this is why we have reviewers and ratings. I should have listened to the reviewer and the questionable ratings AUTOnline has acquired. I placed an order the second week in December. I received a confirmation that all was a go. A couple of days later, I receive a sudden email from AUTOnline that my order had been canceled due to "a massive rush of orders prior to your order and sold out". OK, so why confirm? Why still have the item on the website? This supplier lives on the cutting edge with little inventory and poor record keeping. Buyer beware! If you need it now, you may not get it now!
