When people review headphones they oftentimes write that they hear things in music with those headphones that they never heard before. With the Coby CV320, I had the opposite experience : I failed to hear things that I had always heard before. The problem with these headphones is a very unbalanced frequency response. 4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for the Price, November 8, 2006
This review is from: Coby High-Performance Professional Studio Monitor Headphones CV320 (Silver) (Electronics)
These are fully circumaural headphones, and as a result, they look abnormally large and bulky. The headphones are decently comfortable, although, again because of the circumaural design, use for over 2-3 hours leads to sweaty ears (didn't think ears sweat, did you!). The sound isolation is subpar and little compared to really good full size headphones like...say the sennheiser hd280 pro or bose triport. However, since effective sound isolation is a difficult task to pull off, better isolation usually translates to a big price jump, unless it uses noise cancellation, which is just an annoyance (I've owned 2 already). The sound is pretty good with decent bass. Overall, a n averge full sized headphone, but still deserves 4 stars because, well it cost 6 dollars.

I bought these for my husband to listen to Bible CD's that I loaded onto our iPod. He has some hearing loss in one ear and with the regular earbuds he could only hear in his good ear. With these headphones, he can hear in both ears and he really likes that. They sound pretty good with music, but are great with the book format. I personally do not care for the large around the ear sytle headphones, but he does not mind them and says that outside factors are less distracting to him when he has these on. He did not care for the earbud style headphones. The price was amazingly low and they work for our needs.

When people review headphones they oftentimes write that they hear things in music with those headphones that they never heard before. With the Coby CV320, I had the opposite experience : I failed to hear things that I had always heard before. The problem with these headphones is a very unbalanced frequency response. Bass is strong, but the midrange is quite recessed, and the high frequencies are also quite recessed except for a narrow band of frequencies that are over-emphasized giving an artificial trebly quality. There is no upper treble at all, and this results in cymbals having no sizzle and bell-type instruments having a dead quality to them.

To explain the frequency response in another way, imagine yourself sitting in the audience listening to a rock band. With the Coby CV320, the bass guitar, cymbals, and wood blocks would be right in your face, and all other instruments (e.g. guitar, organ, drums, and vocals) would be back stage. It is those back-stage instruments that are playing the main musical content. As a result you get a very distorted image of what the music is about -- you won't properly hear the parts of the music that the composer intended.

On the plus side, these headphones have full-sized circumaural (around the ear) earpieces which are quite comfortable. However the headband is a hard plastic with no padding, so you would probably want to supply your own padding. The headphones also have volume controls on each earpiece which is unusual for this price.

In summary, the frequency response of these headphones is just too far out of balance; indeed, these headphones have the most out of balance frequency response that I have ever heard. If you need a really cheap pair of headphones, try the Coby CVH42 headphones. I got them for $2 at Dollar General, and they are much, much better headphones than the Coby CV320. As a matter of fact, they compare favorably to many $20 pair of headphones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, affordable choice., December 27, 2008
This review is from: Coby High-Performance Professional Studio Monitor Headphones CV320 (Silver) (Electronics)
I use these mainly while playing the drums to cancel out some of the sound, and they do a good job, especially for the price. They could be better, but for an amateur, they get the job done. They are bulky, though, so I just them in the house. I can hear more with them than with ear-bud styles, which is great if you're at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than most headphones many times the price!, September 9, 2009
This review is from: Coby High-Performance Professional Studio Monitor Headphones CV320 (Silver) (Electronics)
I have owned many different pairs of headphones over the years, and generally speaking...I have had more letdowns than positives with them, with many pairs only lasting a few short months before falling apart. Not so with the Coby CV320, which I bought almost 4 years ago, and still functions today. You have no idea how many times I have accidentially dropped these headphones, and they just kept working, thanks to the quality materials used, so you don't have to worry about the headphones falling apart on you. Durability isn't the only thing going for the CV320, but you also have an extremely full bass sound, which just may be the best sounding pair of headphones that I have owned to date, including some pairs that were many times the price of the CV320. The dual volume control is another very nice feature, and one that I wish more headphones had as well. Coby may not be as well known of a company as Sony or Panasonic, but with quality headphones like these, they should be!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, but you have to be careful with them., February 24, 2010

These headphones have a great sound, enough bass for your average user, and decent noise cancellation. Unfortunately the plastic used in them is very cheap... I have a feeling if they were accidentally dropped or had any type of pressure put on them they would break. The good news... they only cost about $8 so if you can be nice to them they will serve their purpose well for the money spent. Also, I really like the dual volume control... I have a bit of hearing loss in one ear and sometimes headphones sound weird because the sound is uneven... the dual sound allows me to adjust to get a more even sound. So for anyone with a similar problem... these work great. Overall... you can't go wrong for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, May 16, 2006
This review is from: Coby High-Performance Professional Studio Monitor Headphones CV320 (Silver) (Electronics)
These headphones are by far my favorite that I've had in a long time. For me, being with not that much money, I don't have enough to be buying $100+ headphones, so when I was in need of a new set, and saw these for $10, I just bought them, hoping it would be good. And they were. The sound is better than any set of headphones I've used in a very long time. And the fact that it covers your whole ear, it blocks out a lot of outside sound. It is very comfortable too. The only bad thing about them is the dual-volume. It's really just very unecessary, maybe even more annoying than that, because sometimes when I'm done with them, I put them down, and something will hit the volume knob. It doesn't happen too often, and won't happen if you're wearing them. I've laid in my bed many times with them on and the volume wasn't touched. Overall, it's a great buy. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't have tons of money, and wants good headphones.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate for Work - Not Adequate for Coldplay, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Coby High-Performance Professional Studio Monitor Headphones CV320 (Silver) (Electronics)
I purchased these headphones to listen to monthly training topics on my computer at work. To expect fidelity out of something like this is silly. When I purchased these headphones about a year ago, they were under six bucks. What I needed was the sound isolation (so my co-workers didn't have to hear my training session) and reasonable short-term comfort. For those to requirements, these headphones are fine. I would never listen to Mylo Xyloto with these. The headpones I own (still the CV320) has volume controls on each earcup, which differs from the unit pictured by Amazon.com. Oh...and even after 20 minutes of listening to online training, just as some other reviews have already stated, my ears start to sweat...which is gross. Bottom line. If you buy cheap headphones you will typically get cheap sound. All I needed was "sound" and that is just what I got. If this review was helpful to you, please say so. Thanks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Awful sound, but very inexpensive, May 8, 2011
This review is from: Coby High-Performance Professional Studio Monitor Headphones CV320 (Silver) (Electronics)
These headphones have an awful boxy sound, with no mids whatsoever, and lots of weird things happening with the high frequencies. This makes it unusable for any mixing purposes, and not ideal for listening to music. However, it has decent sound isolation, and is comfortable enough, so it gets use as tracking monitors in the studio. It's also dirt cheap, so I suppose it's OK for the price...

Vendor had a good price. I use headphones every day at work. These are good quality for my purposes, and hold up well under daily use. They are comfortable and the sound quality is OK for casual listening.
