Mine was just horrible,

I really urge everyone to stay far away from this product if you value your cassettes. The one I purchased mangled the first cassette I put in (an irreplaceable one - how could I have been so silly as to put it in without testing the player?). In any case, this product really is a piece of junk. But then, you get what you pay for.
I do want to add that amazon came through for me.

not for recording,
This review is from: Coby CX144 Portable AM/FM Cassette Player/Recorder (Electronics)
I bought this for recording my son playing violin for his review, but the play back sound was terrible.
Not clear and not big enough. I was very disappointed with this one. I should have bought Sony one.

Eater of tapes!,
This review is from: Coby CX144 Portable AM/FM Cassette Player/Recorder (Electronics)
I bought several of these for use in my third grade classroom, both for listening to tapes and for kids to record their own books-on-tape. Like others have said, you get what you pay for with this product. Right away I lost three tapes to these machines. Plus, the volume control is extremely touchy... the slightest tap and it's WAY TOO LOUD, slightly tap it the other way and you can't hear a thing. As I haven't even tried to use them as voice recorders (I'm not trusting one more tape to these things!) I can't report on that aspect, but the volume control and tape ruining issues are more than bad enough.

Works fine for books on tape,

I don't know why the other reviewers are so down on this item. I agree it's not wonderful for listening to music, but if you only listen to talk radio and books on tape, this machine does fine. It has never eaten any tapes I put in it. Can't beat the price. Why pay more for a boombox that has a CD or stereo sound, if you don't need it. These days, it's difficult to find any boombox that plays cassettes - I looked at lots of stores. I'm very happy with this purchase.

I read the negative reviews of this product,
This review is from: Coby CX144 Portable AM/FM Cassette Player/Recorder (Electronics)
So I just bought two of them to take a chance - cause I needed a simple operation for a project I am doing. They both worked excellently. I gave each of them a vigorous work-out - and they passed every test. -- This is what I learned. Your stop button is a neutral or a clutch - like on a car - it must be engaged between any change in actions. Play -stop - rewind. Play-stop-Fast forward. Play-stop-record - etcetera -- else your player will eat your tapes. ie If you go from play to rewind without first engaging the clutch (the stop button) you will strip some gears. Secondly - one lady complained about the volume adjustment - your clutch on that is to return to start each time before you set your volume. Or - you can simply spray some WD-40 on the slide and it will be more sensitive to volume differences. I have not played 20 tapes yet.(I have played about 10 tapes) - but after every 20 tapes - I will clean the heads with a blank cassette made especially to clean tape heads when one runs it through the player.

i read all the options many times for the colby radios offered. the options state for the model i purchased that it has an external microphone and that you can record with it. the radio has no such option and you can only record from the radio. now iam stuck with it. it will cost me more to send it back than what the radio is worth IAM NOT HAPPY AT ALL

For the price, it is a decent value. the sound is fair. The buttons are kinda cheap. I have seen better made cassette players for the same money.
For the office it is fine. i still have alot of cassettes i like and it suits me fine for at work.

The coby boombox is defInately worth getting. The cassette player and radio work pretty well and I would recommend this to anyone who wants an inexpensive and reliable boom box.

It has very good sound quality and it is small enough to take anywhere you go. It is made of very good materials.

Thought I'd be different!,
This review is from: Coby CX144 Portable AM/FM Cassette Player/Recorder (Electronics)
I was looking for a cassette player for my daughter to use. I had read the reviews about this player eating cassettes and thought that maybe they were just really old cassettes. I bought this thinking maybe the one I bought wouldn't do that. I was wrong! The shipping was really quick, and it didn't eat the first one or two cassettes. The third one was the charm. I had to dig the tape out of the play reel. Then my daughter tried again and she managed to get one or two through sucessfully but again it ate another cassette! I am really annoyed that it ate the tapes and now they will never play consistently again. So if you are like me and you check the reviews. Believe me it will eat your tapes!!!! Don't buy it!!!!!!!!
