5.0 out of 5 stars Great little monitor/TV
I was skeptical after reading other reviews but boy,... was I surprised. The negative comments posted prior to this must have been written by some fairly narrow minded folks. Yes the display is 16:9, but that is advertised! The tuner works great. If the signal sucks to start with no TV tuner is going to make it look great. Anyway, when the 7" TV/Monitor arrived I was...

1.0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?
The Coby 7" has a nice bright screen, good reception, and is lightweight. It is also one of the strangest and most useless products I've ever seen.

The screen is 16:9 format. Analog TV (which is what this tv receives) is 4:3, as are many (perhaps all) devices that produce a signal over an AV composite cable -- VCR's, digital cameras and video games. One would...

One would assume there would be a setting to switch to 4:3 mode as there is in every other 16:9 TV (I have two of them).

Guess what? Coby doesn't have a 4:3 setting! So when you watch TV everything is squished. Everyone is a short, fat dwarf. What exactly was Coby thinking when designing this?

I phoned the Coby support line to find out if the aspect ratio could be changed. They said "no." I asked if they realized that made their product completely useless. They said that this was a "design feature."

There is only one silver lining: J&R Electronics took my return with no questions and no grumbling. I liked doing business with them.

The magnitude of this oversight is unbelievable, truly staggering. Caveat emptor...

This item deserves ZERO stars. After many attempts to activate this TV, the picture never appeared. It's a piece of junk! Don't buy it!

Anyway, when the 7" TV/Monitor arrived I was very pleased with quality of the video display. I compared the picture by sitting the unit beside a 19" LCD Panasonic, using the same video source, and quite honestly the color saturation, clarity, contrast and hue were virtually identical. Its primary function is as a security camera adjustment monitor with occasional 'TV' use when traveling. There are well over a dozen video displays in my home ranging from 1 1/4" BW pocket portable to a 10' HD home theatre so there is plenty of material for comparison. I must say the Colby 7" TV is well above average in it's usefulness and functionality. I liked the unit enough that I just ordered a second one through Amazon to give to my father for Christmas!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not A Good Product!, June 14, 2006
This review is from: Coby TF-TV700 7-Inch Portable LCD TV/Monitor (Electronics)
I just gotten this product and I'm not satisfied with it. It doesn't have a good reception to all the channels. I'm sending this product back and I'm going to try Lilliput 8". I saw the reviews on the Lilliput 8" saying it's a good product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Be very careful, January 19, 2007
This review is from: Coby TF-TV700 7-Inch Portable LCD TV/Monitor (Electronics)
With less than six months use, the product began overheating. Video would drop out, the smell of hot electronics was evident, and it began melting the case at the back cooling slots. Coby only warrants these for 90 days -- and then you're SOL. No solution offered, no repair existing.
Tuner was also less than precise, and autoscanned very badly on cable connection resulting if fewer channels that my supplier had available. Sticking to the "rabbit ear" gave me 4 on-air channels.
All in all a very unsatisfactory product and experience.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coby TF-TV700 7-Inch Portable LCD TV/Monitor (Electronics)
Bought this TV for my home office and to use during power outages. It works great for this application. I use the "pull up" built in antenna for local TV stations and it does a good job receiving them. This is worth the money for that next power outage and it is handy to use for other applications. The quality is decent for the price and since you are not going to use this for your typical TV viewing on a regular basis it is excellent. Runs on 10 "AA" batteries for non AC power, cheaper batteries than the "C" or "D" size batteries. I am very satisfied!

This review is from: Coby TF-TV700 7-Inch Portable LCD TV/Monitor (Electronics)
This is a great little tv picture is clear, cable ready, and can be used in home ,car or anywhere because it can be used with batteries. The only thing that makes it a 3 star is it tak 10 yes I said 10 AA batteries and it will not run long on the batteries.

1.0 out of 5 stars no good for regular over the air reception, December 18, 2006

This review is from: Coby TF-TV700 7-Inch Portable LCD TV/Monitor (Electronics)
I purchased on of these sets from another store. I could not receive anything using the attached antenna. Exchanged for a new one, the same results. Returned for a refund and the lady doing the refund for me commented that many have been returned. I live in White Plains, N.Y. about 10 or so air miles from most of the big Manhattan stations. If you can't make it their you can't make it anywhere. My 20+ year old Sony handheld Watchman TV does OK under the same conditions. Save your money and look for a better unit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad at all - This is a TV for my Kitchen wall !, June 16, 2006
By
This review is from: Coby TF-TV700 7-Inch Portable LCD TV/Monitor (Electronics)
Hey. In Brazil, everybody had a little and cheap TV set on their kitchens. Mainly are cheat CRT (5' Tubes), with a boxed body. So. This Coby TV is a PERFECT replacement for this kind of aplication. I bought one today, to put it on my Kitchen Wall and i will have a tiny and thin LCD Widescreen TV set on my kitchens wall, to watch Cable TV channels while Breakfasting. :) So. This is perfect for me. I can even put it near my computer with PS2 pluged in to play some games on my spare times...
I know there's a lot more better brands on the market, but in Brazil, this Tv is just arriving at the stores. And with a afordable price for us...

So. It's not bat at all. Reception, on Cable, is not Bad. It's average good. For me at least...
