From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9–These utilitarian volumes cover the history, effects, production and distribution of, and getting help with the featured substances. Each title includes Web sites that the publisher promises to keep up-to-date for five years after publication. Although designed for reports, the readable texts are suitable for general use. They contain approachable vocabulary and actual stories of abuse. The pages are designed to look like a computer screen. Some illustrations that appear to be taken directly off the Web are blurry and hard to read. However, the charts, tables, and clear color photographs aid in understanding. Sarah Lennard-Brown's Cocaine (Raintree, 2004) and Elaine Landau's Cocaine (Watts, 2003) contain more information and are written for an older audience. Claudia B. Manley's Crack and Your Circulatory System and Scott P. Werther's Ecstasy and Your Heart (both Rosen, 2001) are written for a similar audience, including reluctant readers, but are not as well documented. Brock E. Schroeder's Ecstasy (Chelsea House, 2004) and Judy Monroe's Steroids, Sports, and Body Image (Enslow, 2004) offer more information at a higher reading level.–Debbie Stewart Hoskins, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI
