This second edition highlights the research effort that has been mounted to discover the most effective way of helping cocaine-dependent patients. It covers an identification of cocaine, different modes of use, its effects on the brain and other organs, and its psychological and social consequences for users and those around them. This book also covers cocaine addiction, how it happens, who is at risk, how to treat it and how to find help. It contains a list of commonly-asked questions about the drug and a self-test to determine if you are dependent.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The authors, both psychiatry professors at Harvard Medical School, have first-hand knowledge of cocaine abuse from their work at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Center at McClean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. In this valuable guidebook, they study cocaine abuse, examining the drug's history, the scope of the current epidemic, its effects on the mind and body, and the psychological, social and behavioral factors contributing to cocaine dependence. Many case histories illustrate their data, including a lengthy account by "Ellen": "When I did a lot of freebasing, I would think there were bugs crawling on me and I would scratch until I had terrible infections up and down my right arm and leg." Weiss and Mirin also cover use in the workplace, the effects on families of users and treatment methods, concluding with answers to such frequently asked questions as "Is it possible to overdose on cocaine?" A "self-test" and a nationwide list of cocaine abuse facilities are featured in the appendix.

From Library Journal

This publication by two psychiatrists working in the area of substance abuse presents an excellent overview of cocaine use and abuse. Unlike the self-help books on cocaine that focus on case studies, this book treats the subject matter comprehensively and extensively. A brief history of the cocaine epidemic is given, along with how cocaine is used and how it affects the body and brain functions. The phenomenon of dependence, use in the work place, methods of treatment, and the questions most frequently asked about the drug are also addressed. This book may well become the major authorative information source about cocaine. Barbara J. Powell, Veterans Administration Ctr., Kansas City, Mo.

1.0 out of 5 stars Get another book..., September 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cocaine (Hardcover)
The information is outdated. The book seems to be based on the writers' opinions rather than research. Content organization and layout is confusing, along with a VERY poor index. I do not support the usage of controlled substances but this book simply tries to brainwash the reader that cocaine is the worst thing to happen to earth and that cocaine users are evil. I would go with another book that helps you make the right decision by showing you facts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can I get a refund?, October 8, 2000
This review is from: Cocaine (Hardcover)
Well here's an actual quote: "business losses due to drug-related decreases in productivity.....amount to billions of dollars anually". The author(s) never mentioned how they came up with such statements. No reference to documents, studies or anything of this sort. Alot of the examples in the book are rare and extreme. Instead of saying 'cocaine might do this and that to you' The text sounded more like 'cocaine WILL do this and that to you'... Many other books on cocaine around, choose carefully!
