4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent roots reggae from Cedric Myton's Congos!!, May 29, 2006

This review is from: Cock Mouth Kill Cock (Audio CD)
By year's end, the Congos' "Cock Mouth Kill Cock" is sure to be one of 2006's best reggae releases!

Cedric Myton IS the Congos, and he turns in a fine 14-track roots reggae effort w/ "Cock Mouth..."

The album opens w/ the title track, which immediately pulls you in w/ Myton's unique falsetto vocal style. The title track is also on the 2005 release "Cedric 'Congo' Myton - Inna De Yard," which is also worth seeking out!

The track "God's Kingdom" is pure roots reggae - it sounds like authentic circa-'70's reggae, as does most of this album. Other standout cuts include: "Watch & Pray" (check out the cool funk riff), "River Beng Come Down" ('70's classic style roots - w/ inspired vocals!), "Citizen Of The World" (dub-style cut), "Heaven Rejoice" (sung over the instrumentation for "Satta Massagana"), and "Throw Down Your Armour" (draw your own conclusions w/ the lyrical content, which makes references to the "...Unjustified War...").

Nearly every track on this album harkens back to the early music of the Congos. There is no cheesy instrumentation or effects to be found here - Many times, current reggae tunes lose their appeal by turning over the music to generic-sounding keyboards & electronic drum machines. The album was produced by Myton & Dub King & written by Myton and his wife Yvonne.

It seems as though the Congos will FOREVER be compared to their landmark release "Heart Of The Congos" (produced by Lee Perry, 1977) because that album set the standard w/ its unbelievable vocals matched w/ its unbelievable production! However, even in the absence of Perry's brilliant work, the Congos still have a great vocalist in Cedric Myton!

If you're a reggae purist & you're looking for classic roots reggae music, then check out this fine album from the Congos!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cock Mouth Kill Cock...Kills!, September 14, 2007
This review is from: Cock Mouth Kill Cock (Audio CD)
Amazing roots with incredibly heavy bass for dub fiends. The other reviewer has already outlined some of the classic riddims included on this cd - riddims which you will surely appreciate in a new light when accompanied by Cedric Myton's beautiful voice. "Citizens of the World" and "Some a Thief" are perfection, while the opening "Cock Mouth" starts things off right. Highly recommended!
