Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Gurvis, a contributor to People and other magazines, has created a curious volume about the oddities contained in America's off-beat museums. The range is quite wide, with entries ranging from the Lunchbox Museum in Columbus, Georgia, the Center for the History of Foot Care and Foot Wear in Philadelphia, and the Johnstown Flood Museum in Pennsylvania. After reading the book, the author's rationale for selection of the sites remains unclear. Rather than a directory, this book consists of a rather breezy montage of journalism and travel memoirs, with a "human interest" theme often appearing. Consistent with her casual style, Gurvis cites costs as "slight fees" or "admission charged"; however, she includes phone numbers for further information. Suitable for public libraries with large travel collections. (Introduction not seen.)-Robin P. Peek, GSLIS, Simmons Coll., Boston

4.0 out of 5 stars Lookin' for strange museums on your vacation?, July 9, 1997

This review is from: The Cockroach Hall of Fame: And 101 Other Off-The-Wall Museums (Paperback)
Then this is the book you need. Straightforward, with exact addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation and admission info, it's a quick guide to visiting weird museums in each state plus a couple in Canada, like the one for the Dionne Quintuplets. Wanna visit the very first McDonald's in the U.S.? How about the Shoe Museum in Philadelphia? Or a museum on burlesque in California? Then check out this book. - Lori M. Sampson
