5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection from the King of Mambo, June 8, 2011
This review is from: Cocktail Hour: Perez Prado (Audio CD)
This is a terrific collection of wonderful STEREO recordings of mostly mambo's from the King of Mambo himself, Dámaso Perez Prado. You get his biggest international hits, including the classic "Mambo #5", from very early 50's, the fabulous horn slide that signals the beginning of "Cerezo Rosa", known in English as "Cherry blossom Pink, Apple Blossom White", the lounge standard "Patricia" (featured in a scandalous strip scene in Fellini's film "La Dolce Vita"), and the fabulous "Norma, la de Guadalajara", with the deepest, lowest trombone blast you'll ever hear, and my single favorite PP tune. And that's only the first of the two discs. Disc 2 starts with "Mambo Jambo", a slower version of "Qué Rico el Mambo" (which is nearly frenetic in pace) from disc one. PP gives a mambo treatment to a standard bolero tune with "Quizás, Quizás, Quizás", better known as "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps", as well as the Cuban classic "Frenesí", and Venezuela's most famous tune, "Alma Llanera". The biggest hit from disc two is "Guaglione", in itself a treatment of an Italian pop song. All in all, this is a very good collection, the recording is pristine with excellent stereo and I recommend it highly.

I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF PEREZ PRADO AND HIS ORCHESTRA. IF YOU WANT TO MAMBO, YOU CAME TO THE RIGHT PLACE. ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES THE MUSIC IS JUST A BIT TOO MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE TAKING DANCE LESSONS IN AN ARTHUR MURRAY STUDIO. I HAVE A LOT OF CD'S IN THE "COCKTAIL HOUR" SERIES, THEY ARE ALL 2 CD'S AND GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY.
