PreSchool-Grade 2–Four-line rhymes touch on one event or activity for each month of the year. Some of the selections are obvious–New Years Day, Valentines Day, St. Patricks Day. Other holidays, like the Fourth of July, are not included. Julys verse is about Magic Camp. Decembers verse is not holiday specific, but the picture has both a Christmas tree and a menorah in the window. The photo illustrations of pompon chicks posed in miniature sets provide more interest than the text. Young readers will enjoy finding small objects and details, but they will likely miss the picture story and the humor. The verses are not particularly clever. On Saint Patricks we march in the yearly parade./Theres music and dancing and green lemonade./I walk down the street with my whole Girl Scout troop./It would have been fun, had I not slipped in poop. The brief rhymes and appealing illustrations seem to indicate a good choice for preschoolers. SLOANE TANEN is the creator of the bestselling adult book Bitter with Baggage Seeks Same as well as four other books for adults and children featuring her clever chick dioramas. She received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and holds graduate degrees in literary theory from New York University, and in art history from Columbia University. She lives with her husband and son in New York City.

Small children and the adults who read to them must both delight in Coco. This chic avian ingenue engages both wide-eyed pre-schoolers and their sophisticated elders. Who could resist Coco in her Halloween frog costume?

Here's another total charmer from Tanen. I read "Coco All Year Round" to my 10-month old son and he seemed to really enjoy the pictures. And I love the clever captions and quirky characters. I'm a big fan of Tanen's chicken books and highly recommend this newest one (and all the others) for the young and the young-at-heart.

I've read the reviews that trash this book because it isn't what they think of child's book. I think it is adorable and fun. Sloane Tannen does a great job with all her chick books. I have found that no matter what, the kids love the books just to see the chicks and all the details. Her counting book is wonderful for children and this one gives kids great visuals about the changing seasons. I own them all because I think it is such a wonderful collection. So it boils down to, if you don't have a sense of humor, you may think a few vignettes in this book may not be for children, otherwise, it's all good! I HIGHLY recommend all of the Chick books!
