Biography

CocoRosie is sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady, a visionary duo with a startling ability to tackle the most taboo of subjects with complete honesty and spiritual freedom. Crafting songs that blend a myriad of styles and references ranging from folk and opera to hip-hop and reggae, the sisters often tranform the most painful of experiences into memorable, evocative pop anthems. Taken as a whole, CocoRosie is an ongoing dialogue between the siblings. Each sister has her own persona and vocal delivery; Bianca delivers hard-hitting truths in a child-like voice while Sierra responds in pure open tones, playing a range of instruments including the harp, flute, piano, and guitar.

Back with a remarkable fifth album, entitled Tales Of A GrassWidow, CocoRosie produced their latest effort in collaboration with Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurðsson and incorporated a host of guest performances, including frequent collaborator Antony Hegarty. Out in North America on May 28th, the sisters have decided to move forward with a self release in hopes of maintaining a new level of creative control over the process. The result is magnificent, a bold lyrical composition that draws parallels between the destruction of the earth's natural resources and the loss of innocence resulting from child abuse, synthesizes electronic and organic sounds, convey a futuristic, back-to-nature feeling while tackling bold issues. This is not music for or by the faint of heart and mind.

In their ten years as CocoRosie, the sisters have released four albums: Grey Oceans (2010), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), Noah’s Ark (2005), and their first album La Maison De Mon Rêve (2004) – each inspiring equal amounts of controversy, debate and praise.

With a strong creative vision running through every aspect of their work, CocoRosie are regarded not only for their music but also for their additional artistic endeavors, which often become sources of inspiration for their songwriting. In addition to hosting informal fashion shows, artist salons and poetry readings, Sierra has arranged and performed operas in Sydney, Amsterdam and London, while Bianca has exhibited her visual art around the world. This spring, the duo will unveil their work on a production of "Peter Pan" by the Berliner Ensemble along with theatre director Robert Wilson. Later this year, Bianca will launch "Girls Against God," an arts and letters print publication that keeps in line with the sisters' personal feminist mission.
